Campus safety at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is a priority and is executed thoroughly. Students feel very safe on campus, so much so that walking alone at night isn't questioned. However, students should still use common sense and always keep in mind that something could happen. Escort services are readily available if there is a late night at the library. UNCW has its own campus police force, not part of the greater Wilmington community, and is always patrolling around campus. The campus police are fully sworn officers, and their presence is very noticeable. There are call-boxes located all around campus, and from each box you should be able to see another. At night, the call-boxes have a lit blue light on the top, so they're very visible. If a student ever feels unsafe or if there is an emergency, he or she can press the button on the nearest call-box and talk directly to a UNCW campus police dispatcher. If a button is pressed and campus police don't hear a reply, they're going to assume it's an emergency and will be at that location quickly. The biggest crime on campus is "bike borrowing": If a student doesn't lock up his or her bike, it will get taken. So, students who bring a bike to campus should get it registered at the police station on campus. The residence halls all have 24-hour front desk personnel in the lobby that keep track of who is entering the building, making sure only students who live there can gain access. Visitors are welcome but just have to be signed in separately. UNCW students are kept very well-informed about anything happening on campus, such as siren tests or weather threats.

The Student Health Center, located in DePaolo Hall, is very accessible and convenient. It's free to go see a registered nurse if there is a concern, but costs will be applied for any tests or prescriptions filled. The pharmacy is convenient for students wanting to pick up any regular prescriptions on campus rather than off.
