The atmosphere of Wilmington definitely fits the expectations a beach/port city might have. The city is very accommodating of students and the need for it to be somewhat of a college town with good nightlife, great restaurants and dining, a variety of shopping options, and of course, the beach is only seven miles away from campus! Student discounts, Seahawk pride, and student fun can be seen throughout the city. Frequent festivals, events, concerts, and entertainment features are brought to Wilmington, though not as many big-name events come local.
The capital of North Carolina, Raleigh, is only two hours away; however, straight down Interstate 40, so many bigger events are still readily accessible. Students do tend to spend a lot of time on campus because of classes, large involvement with student organizations and clubs, sports, and the fact that UNCW has provided any off-campus needs conveniently on campus. On weekends, more students venture off campus to take advantage of the nearby attractions and great Wilmington elements. Wilmington offers diversity in regards to its atmosphere and in a little bit of everything. Whether it's quaint downtown during the day or trendy downtown at night, fun beach days or casual beach nights, students' friends and families are going to be begging to come spend time in Wilmington and at UNCW.
