Being right by the coast, UNCW holds up the beach weather reputation—mild, relatively warm, year-round. Summers are obviously very enjoyable, but as is typical for the South, it can feel or actually be more than 100 F especially in July. It's also pretty humid during the summer months, but both humidity and heat are to be expected for a North Carolina summer, and UNCW holds all of the key elements for perfect beach weather. Sometimes people think that beach weather continues throughout the year, as if UNCW is located in the Tropics. This, however, is not entirely the case. Yes, winters are nowhere near as cold or as long as a lot of other places in the United States, but being by the ocean means a lot of wind.

A 55-degree winter day can feel a whole lot colder than what the thermostat says because of the wind chill. Also, every Wilmingtonian soon discovers the unexpected showers typical of Wilmington weather. One minute, it will be sunny, and the next, there's a downpour. When it rains, it pours. UNCW (and Wilmington in general) is a very flat area, so flooding is also common when it does rain. All a student has to do to prepare for Wilmington weather is simply that: Be prepared. Have rain boots, a big umbrella, a small umbrella, and a sturdy and very waterproof rain jacket on hand. Overall, Wilmington weather is lovely—mostly sunny with a chance of random rain.
