The computer system is decent, but often overloads with too many people trying to access the same site, especially during class registration. The University is very helpful with grants and does provide financial assistance for purchasing lap tops. They are nearly required for every class.

So the weather...being from NY I just expected it to be a lot warmer than what I was used to. That proved to be true. However, there was a lot of things I didn't expect. When you arrive in the fall be prepared for rain, humidity, lots of sweating, and heat. Its quite annoying how uncomfortable the weather is at that time. The winters are more mild with snow on RARE occasions, but when it does snow, everything shuts down because they aren't prepared for it. The spring is my favorite because it gets warm as early as late March early April. One thing I warn though, is that the weather is SO unpredictable- it'll be beautiful in the morning and then monsoons in the afternoon, so be prepared.

Carolina is a very fratty school, so campus and local police know whats happening in Frat court every weekend so those parties are almost never busted. The parties that do get busted are the ones in the dorms because we have a "Quiet Hours" rule- you're supposed to be quiet after 9pm every day. RA's and particularly annoying hall mates may bust you if you have something going on in your room that they can hear, but for the most part that doesnt happen much. If you get caught, you usually have to take an alcohol edu class and meet with some supervisors, but if its your first offense nothing goes on your record.

The computers situation at Carolina are good, not great. Not getting wifi in the dorms is definitely a drawback (only the lucky ones who live next to a study lounge get wifi service). Sometimes the network is slow and it can get quite frustrating if you're doing something important. Printing is pretty good. The CCI printing is for the most part reliable but plan ahead when printing something important because sometimes it takes forever for printers to warm up or when waiting on line.

Most locations off campus are small locally owened and locally supplied resturaunts. While there are the common chains available there is always that favorite place you are going to miss if you move away because it only exist by this campus.

I am working on going to optometry school and I have no fears about finding a job once I complete my program. This field is expanding and growing quickly based on a growing older population that require routine eye care and also the average age of the professional in this field in 50+ yrs old leading to a huge retriement vs entry level gap in the near future.

The location of the school is conveinent to many food locations, and towns that hold cultural events. There are several shopping malls in the within the triangle some include a 20-30 mintue drive but they have a lot of stores with plenty of options. The campus itself is not located close to big museums but there are several options 20-30 mintues east of campus.

The process for me was easier than expected. Being a part-time studies student I did not have to worry about transfering transcripts and proving my capability with testing. I had not problems getting enrolled in the classes that I needed vs. having to wait. The process was simple and did not take long at all to get set up in their system.

Being a working adult learner I find that while they are considered a major university, they are also very accomodating to those of us who are re-entering school for further education needs.

UNC basketball is practically a religion in itself. People on and around campus are Tarheel fanatics and it's always fun to witness the enthusiasm among crowds.

UNC is very religiously, sexually, and politically diverse but not everyone is accepting

I'm not quite sure about the housing off campus, but they look cool

You are given $40 worth of printing at the beginning of the semester (each page costs 10 cents) and a huge amount of minutes on any computer in the library you want. Both of those are great but what I think is most helpful is the fact that there are so many technological resources available on campus. If anything happens to your computer, ANYTHING AT ALL, they'll have a solution for you.

I received the only amount of financial aid I probably would be eligible for so I am grateful for that. It is difficult though because sometimes according to a family's profile they are labelled as not needing money so work-study jobs are not open to those students. Some of my friends are there for full financial aid though so they really appreciate it.

I was placed in a great dorm so I was very lucky. The general atmosphere is very social but respectful at the same time. If you want to play a ping pong tournament with your friends or just do homework in a lounge both of those are possible. The Residential Advisors are upperclassmen students so they are awesome for advise or help regarding anything and they're always looking to have a good, safe time.

Carolina can be an incredibly beautiful place when the weather decides to behave. The key word though is behave. You never know what you're going to get. One day it was 70 degrees and amazing to be outside, the next day it was 50 and rainy.

Franklin Street has a huge range of great food. Everything you can imagine from food chains like Chipotle to local shops such as the Yogurt Pump. It's a great place to just go out for and enjoy company and great food.

I do not have a lot of experience with the "drug" scene at UNC, but from what I have seen, policies are pretty well enforced. Obviously there is a presence of alcohol, and there will always be peer pressure to a certain degree, but I do not believe that it is out of control on campus.

Franklin Street and Chapel Hill have great options for off-campus dining. There is a good variety of chain restaurants along with unique spots distinct to Chapel Hill. The pricing is pretty good across the board. There are the more upscale places that really are not too outrageous price wise, and then there are the more casual dining restaurants that are convenient and relatively cheap.

Parking on campus is pretty limited, and the permits are very expensive.

Computers are pretty good at UNC, however can get filled up during midterms/final times. While almost everyone gets a computer through the school, those without computers definitely can get access to a computer at a lab.

There are many off campus housing options (apartments, houses, duplexes). But to get a high quality housing option, people need to start early in the search process. While quality is overall good for student housing, it is what you pay for.

Sports in general at UNC are very important. Almost all athletics are supported.

Guys & Girls:
Melting Pot of dress and personality types at Chapel Hill. There is a 60/40 split girls to guys...seriously there are more beautiful girls and hunky guys. However, all individuals are very intelligent. There is something for everyone, and most people are very active, there will always be someone out running on a nice day. Very easy to meet people at school and community events.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
