Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you are an athlete, a sports fan, or both, UNC is your paradise. Everyone is familiar with UNC’s storied basketball program, and many even link a direct correlation to the color powder blue and our basketball team. Football, men and women’s basketball, and soccer are three of the more competitive and popular varsity sports at UNC. Other varsity teams include baseball, crew, lacrosse, rugby, and swimming. All varsity sports are competitive, and walking on to any at UNC is a long-shot because of the crop of talent that is shipped into UNC every year. It is not uncommon to have a class with one of your favorite school athletes.

However, if you don’t make the team, or if you’re simply not interested in the varsity level, you can join a club or intramural sport. These provide a high degree of competition without the time commitment and pressure that varsity sports demand. Club sports require tryouts, and both club and intramural have tournaments on and off campus. Overall, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a school with more pride and respect for its athletics than UNC.

Go Heels!

The basketball team is idolized by the majority of the student body, but with so many scandals happening with the football team, I just couldn't give an A.

School Spirit

Every student, even those who pretend to be devoid of any school spirit, is proud to be a Tar Heel. Because sports have such an impact on the Carolina culture, it’s hard not to have any school spirit. Carolina apparel is a must at UNC. Students wear their powder blue T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, shorts, wind pants, and hats religiously to classes and sporting events. Furthermore, if the basketball or football team wins a game, then there’s likely to be a hot party afterward. UNC students are known to rush Franklin Street after a big win.

Getting Tickets

A student ID allows you access to most varsity sport games. However, basketball is a little more intense. You must enter an online lottery process in order to get tickets. If you are chosen, you receive an e-mail a few days before the game with your ticket. If you don’t receive a ticket, you are able to wait in a stand-by line the day of the game. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get in.
