Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, students at UNC seem happy with their living arrangements. However, a good majority of upperclassmen recommend that incoming freshmen stay on South Campus for the dynamic social life alone. If you are interested in a more inclusive, active residential environment, there is theme housing available. This allows students to interact with hallmates who share similar interests. Each dorm has an office area where students can rent movies, DVD players, VCRs, Playstations, and basketballs, and even pick up mail. Each hall floor or wing has an RA who is responsible for arranging hall activities and posting upcoming campus events. Most of the dorms have a recreation area and parking in the vicinity. Students who are over 21 are allowed to have alcohol in the rooms, and a smoking room can be requested in select dorms. Most dorms have a laundry facility.

UNC promises to keep its campus updated with the latest equipment and facilities, although the administration often takes a long time to follow through on these promises. In 2001, UNC built four new dorms on South Campus and renovated several dorms on Middle Campus. Whatever living arrangement you desire: single, double, triple, coed, single-sex, theme housing, student family housing, North, Middle, or South Campus—there’s a dorm that will suit your needs. Finding the perfect roommate—well, that’s another story.

Campus Housing at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

North Campus Is Great.

UNC has great campus housing options. None of the dorms are super gross or terrible. They all have air-conditioning and UNC renovates the oldest ones as often as the budget allows.

The walk from South Campus where most freshmen dorms are is a pain, and the buses that run the campus loop are always way too full during the day time. However, the dorms themselves are nice.

My only complaint is that they could be a lot more social.

Housing Amenities

it's not really convenient to cook on campus if you choose not to have a meal plan. often times the kitchen is several floors below or above you and there isn't elevator access if you are carrying hot kitchen ware and enhancements, printing and laundry facilities are not always accessible in the dorm that you live in.

On Campus Living

While they may not be the swankiest digs, dorms are rather convenient and they allow you to get involved in more late night on-campus activities. Also, you don't need to worry about cleaning your house and you have on-call maintenance for anything that may break which is a great perk.
