Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If going Greek is something that interests you, UNC has 22 fraternities that comprise the Interfraternity Council (IFC), 10 Panhellenic sororities, eight Historical Black Fraternities and Sororities, nine in the Greek Alliance Council, two honor, and several professional fraternities. However, don’t expect to rush a fraternity or sorority and immediately start getting hammered off of rum and cokes—it just doesn’t work that way. Greeks are required to devote a certain amount of time to their organization, volunteer around the area, and sponsor activities for non-Greek students. Several of the IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities have houses close to campus, several located near Frat Court where Greeks party every weekend. To join, students have to maintain a certain GPA, be a student of the University, and be recruited by the organization. The intake policies differ for each organization, and hazing is illegal, but supposedly still happens.

Only a little under 12 percent of UNC students are Greeks, so if going Greek is not for you, 88 percent of the student population feels the same way. If you are not Greek, that does not mean that you cannot attend a sorority or fraternity party, it just means that you are not committing yourself to a group. Greek or not Greek, it does not define or rule the social scene.

Not for Everyone

Frats at UNC are teeming with bunch of obnoxious southern white privilege weirdos. Easy to avoid the type since they clearly mark themselves (pastel pants, boat shoes, croakies, etc) and travel in packs. Not all frats on campus are of this type, so it is possible to find one that fits.

So Many Frat Boys

Greek life is very active, but you're not required to be a part of it 0or pressured into it... Unless you live in Granville.

Big on Greek Life

UNC has a thriving Greek scene from the cookie cutter sororities and fraternities to diverse academic, athletic, as well as some religious fraternities and sororities. It never fails for there to be groups of girls heading up to Franklin and going out to party every Friday and Saturday night. Personally, I don't care much for the frat parties but if you are wanting, there is always something going on. Also, the sorority and fraternity houses are just beautiful to say the least.
