Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At UNC there is no shortage of places to meet members of the opposite sex. Parties, campus activities, clubs, sports, and Lenoir are all good places to meet people. This is not a problem at UNC, especially if you’re a guy because of the 60:40 girl to guy ratio. Sustaining a relationship is quite possible here. There are plenty of romantic restaurants to take a date, or if you are willing to venture out a little further, there are some of the finest mountains in the Appalachian Range less than two hours away. A weekend of hiking, biking, and camping could serve as an alternative to dinner and a movie when you’re living in North Carolina.

There’s a popular saying: “Carolina girls are best in the world.” Everyone is aware of the disproportionate ratio at UNC. Girls use it to explain why they’re single, and guys use it to brag to their buddies. Most students are smart and outgoing. Everyone at Carolina is unique in his or her own way. You have the Southern belles, the preppies, the classic frat boys, the hip hop lovers, the rockers, the quiet ones, the loud ones, the wannabes, and the ambitious types who are involved in everything. That’s what makes Carolina guys and girls the cream of the crop.

Facts

Social Scene

It is quite easy to meet people at UNC. Since several dorms are coed, you have to run into someone of the opposite sex sooner or later. However, it is up to you to interact with them. Granted, because UNC’s gender ratio is disproportionately female, it is slightly easier for men to date and interact with women. However, because there are so many schools in the area, ladies have a prime selection to choose from as well.

Hookups or Relationships?

There are many students who are in relationships—either with another UNC student or with a student from another college in the area (NC State, Duke, Wake Forest). On the whole, most girls at UNC are in relationships, some more serious than others. However, with more than 17,000 undergrads, there is still a big singles pool available for hookups, friendships, or whatever you choose. For those who are in relationships, there are plenty of romantic restaurants, dance clubs, and movie theaters for you and your significant other to check out. For those still on the singles market, which at Carolina can be a good thing, there are many eateries, clubs, bars, and fraternity or sorority parties for you to find that random hookup or special person.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Some of the best places to meet people of the opposite sex on campus are the dining halls. Ram’s Head, which is the dining hall located on South Campus, allows you the opportunity to mingle with other South Campus residents. On the weekends, the P2P is a hot spot. It is the shuttle service that travels around campus to the dorms and drops students off on Franklin Street. You are sure to have interesting encounters en route to Franklin.

Dress Code

There is no dress code at UNC. Some students dress to impress everyday, while other students dress in whatever they could find that morning that was not curled up into a ball. During the spring and summer seasons, most everyone is in short-sleeves or sleeveless shirts, shorts, skirts, and sandals (typically Rainbow flip-flops). There are a variety of styles ranging from Abercrombie & Fitch to EckoRed, or Gap to a UNC sweatshirt or T-shirt and jeans. Also, when it’s time to dress for a night on the town, Carolina students can certainly clean up.
