Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The safety and security of students is a top priority for UNC officials. The Department of Public Safety heads a first-rate division of police, security, and emergency services that ensures that students live in a safe and secure environment. Public Safety and Community Oriented Policing (COP) keep Chapel Hill safe under a warm and cozy protective blanket. Security guards and campus police patrol the campus and streets 24 hours a day. In case of an emergency, blue-lights are located all over the campus. In case of a medical emergency, UNC Hospital is located on campus.

Firearms are illegal at UNC, further ensuring the security of students. If a student is caught with a gun, he or she faces immediate expulsion. Every dorm requires two keys—one to enter the residence hall and one for your room. A call box is located outside for visitors. P2P Shuttle, P2P On Demand, Safe Shuttle, and Safe Ride are for students who are out late studying, partying, or hanging out with friends. Of course, students have to exercise caution around campus. The biggest crime committed against UNC students is larceny. Students are advised to lock their dorm rooms and not to leave computers and personal belongings out of their sight. However, with UNC Public Safety, personal responsibility, and a little student vigilance, the greatest danger to UNC students is that they might take their college years for granted.

It's Improved

There are late night patrol people and other safety precautions. However, when I attended, there were rapes on campus and our student body president was murdered about 1.5 miles away from campus. Durham (the area surrounding Chapel Hill) is very unsafe. Chapel Hill itself is pretty safe but there are people who wander in from Durham so you always have to be cautious.

Chapel Hill: a University Town and a Unviersity Environment

Chapel Hill is a town that lives in tandem with its academic community; as a result, a good portion of the town's population is bound by the University Honor Code and subject to the Honor Court's ruling. The campus is also a very safe environment overall because the community is supportive and works to keep ITSELF safe. The universtiy supports a program called Safe Walk that ensures students have escorts home after midnight every weeknight, and the Alert System sends out information about weather and crime to students through email and text. That being said, every town has its problems; There have been thefts, muggings, rapes, and even murders. These events, however, are not commonplace. A few incidents happen in any given year, and murders are especially rare.

The Safest

To this date I have never felt unsafe on and around UNC's campus. I've walked throughout Carrboro and Chapel Hill at all hours imaginable, and have not once felt uncomfortable. Bike theft happens often though, so make sure to buy a good lock.
