Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Confer with your roommate to decide who is bringing what and when.
  • Don’t take on a heavy course load freshman year.
  • Get the smallest meal plan possible, plenty of Flex Dollars, and a large expense account.
  • Join a lot of clubs.
  • Look for bed sheets and linens well in advance.
  • Participate in all of the orientation activities.
  • Try to move into the dorms as early in the morning as possible.
Tips to Succeed
  • Ask the TAs questions—that’s why they are there.
  • Check your e-mail constantly.
  • Do your homework yourself.
  • Go to class—even the lectures.
  • Go to the professors’ office hours if you need one-on-one attention; even if a class is not in your intended major, take it if you’ve heard it’s interesting.
  • If you need help, get a tutor—some are free, and the ones who charge are cheap.
  • Keep up with your homework—procrastinating is the worst thing to do in college.
  • Pick classes that interest you.
  • Talk to upperclassmen about what professors to take and which ones to avoid.

Beautiful Campus and Facilities

The campus and facilities at UNC Chapel Hill are beautiful. The school has a great business program and journalism program as well as a few others. The science program (all of them) have a great reputation, but in reality are severely lacking. Do NOT major in any sciences here unless you are prepared to teach yourself 100% of the material, be downgrades (class average on a test is a 90%, but you teacher decides to make a 90 a C), have class averages in the 60s, and have half of your class have to retake a class because your professor's final grade average was a D+ (yes this really happened, in Organic 2 where most of the class were seniors).

Greek Life Is Fun

I really enjoy Greek life here. It's not too big and it provides a niche for you immediately when you get here.

Facts

Traditions
  • Halloween on Franklin Street: Every year, thousands of people from Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, and other areas of the state come to Franklin Street to celebrate Halloween. Even if you don’t like to dress up and join in all the Halloween festivities, at least go to Franklin Street and laugh at everyone else.
  • Message Board: Students often paint the message board in the Pit to advertise their club’s upcoming events.
  • Rushing Franklin: As mentioned before, UNC students are known to rush to Franklin Street after a big basketball win. The largest rushes are usually when we win the NCAA Championship. This is also likely after a Duke-Carolina win, whether home or away. It’s an experience nonetheless---there are bon fires and fans running crazy.
  • Streaking: UNC students have created a strange tradition of streaking through libraries and the Pit around finals time. You’re likely to see some streakers before you graduate from UNC.
  • Tar Heel Town: Before every football game, “Tar Heel Town” is created on the quad. Kids and Chapel Hill locals who are fans of UNC football get a chance to meet and chat with Carolina football players.
Urban Legends
  • Every time a virgin walks by Silent Sam his gun fires.
  • If a male and female sit next to each other on the loveseat in McCorkle Place, they will marry that person.
  • Michael Jordan wanted to purchase a house for UNC’s Omegas.
  • Students who drink from the old well on the first day of class will have good luck.
