Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some students choose to move off campus after their freshman year, while others choose more wisely. The Chapel Hill/Durham area has plenty of moderately priced apartments available, but these will still be there when you start your junior year. The majority of UNC students recommend staying on campus for the first two years then moving off campus for the final two. These students feel that the booming social environment, cheaper rent, and the close proximity to classroom buildings are all things that should discourage apartment seekers from departing campus. However, off-campus student housing attempts to emulate dorm life.

Granville Towers is a student apartment complex located on Franklin Street within walking distance from campus. Many students, freshmen included, choose to live there because it has a cafeteria, a pool, basketball courts, and parking. Even though the Towers are technically off campus, some people consider it a dorm. If you’re looking to get away from dorm life completely, there are condominiums, townhomes, and apartments throughout the area located as close as five minutes or as far as 30 minutes away. Rent ranges anywhere from $360–$800 a month per person. If you have the time and patience to survey the apartments and seek out a good deal, you could pay the same amount as you would to live on campus. It all depends on your price range.

Apartments Vary With Location

There is a wide variety of places to choose from, but the quality and price varies with location. If you want a good apartment that is close to campus, you're going to have to pay a lot more money. You can find moderately priced apartments, but they're going to be a bit farther. However, Chapel Hill transit is pretty good and most apartment complexes are near a bus line.

Many Locations

There is no shortage of apartments. You are sure to find one if you're looking for one, although I find that most people choose to stay on campus. Depending on how far you stay, a car may be necessary.

Housing Amenities

it's not really convenient to cook on campus if you choose not to have a meal plan. often times the kitchen is several floors below or above you and there isn't elevator access if you are carrying hot kitchen ware and enhancements, printing and laundry facilities are not always accessible in the dorm that you live in.
