UNC boasts one of the most accomplished faculties on the East Coast. A large percentage of Carolina’s professors have received awards for their research, and many were inducted into national programs based on their contributions to science, art, and humanities. Dr. Oliver Smithies, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. The Lasker Award is the nation’s most prestigious award that honors contributions to basic medical research. Those who receive it are often called “America’s Nobels,” as 63 scientists who’ve received it later received the Nobel Prize. The faculty, like the student body, is diverse—UNC has over 100 African American faculty members. All professors are required to have office hours, and many will arrange to meet with students by appointment if their office hours conflict with the student’s schedule. Some have even been known to set up student appointments at their private residences. Freshmen and some sophomores are likely to have TAs for their prerequisite courses. Some teachers are less approachable than others, grade unfairly, and test rather hard. Other teachers are friendlier and easier to associate with. Talk to upperclassmen to get the inside scoop on which teachers are interesting and fit your personal needs, and more importantly, which ones to avoid.

I have had both good and bad teachers, some that give more work than others. I know that my school is known for its academic excellence, and I think that is accurate.

The teachers expect a lot out of us, and the workload makes that obvious. UNC is known largely for a few programs, especially the Kenan-Flager Business School, the School of Public Health, and the School of Journalism. We're often labeled a "public-ivy" school because of the difficulty level of the work.

Many professors seemed to be uninterested in teaching, as they were preoccupied with professional standards (retaining tenure, being published, research, and personal interviews). This is the primary reason that the classes were less than interesting. |

Here at Carolina, we have professors who are very experienced and resourceful. Professors here make sure that they are up-to-date with all the latest information and theories. I value each of my professor’s expertise and knowledge of the world in accordance to their particular field. Yes, I personally find the majority of my classes very interesting. However, the enthusiasm comes from my professors and the amount of excitement and interest they have in the subject matter, which is reflected ontothe students. |

Most teachers are very friendly, accommodating, and approachable. All the teachers that I have approached have been more than willing to spend time with me outside of class to help me learn. |
