College Prowler Take
Overall, students at UNC seem happy with their living arrangements. However, a good majority of upperclassmen recommend that incoming freshmen stay on South Campus for the dynamic social life alone. If you are interested in a more inclusive, active residential environment, there is theme housing available. This allows students to interact with hallmates who share similar interests. Each dorm has an office area where students can rent movies, DVD players, VCRs, Playstations, and basketballs, and even pick up mail. Each hall floor or wing has an RA who is responsible for arranging hall activities and posting upcoming campus events. Most of the dorms have a recreation area and parking in the vicinity. Students who are over 21 are allowed to have alcohol in the rooms, and a smoking room can be requested in select dorms. Most dorms have a laundry facility. UNC promises to keep its campus updated with the latest equipment and facilities, although the administration often takes a long time to follow through on these promises. In 2001, UNC built four new dorms on South Campus and renovated several dorms on Middle Campus. Whatever living arrangement you desire: single, double, triple, coed, single-sex, theme housing, student family housing, North, Middle, or South Campus—there’s a dorm that will suit your needs. Finding the perfect roommate—well, that’s another story.

The dorms on South Campus are...
The dorms on South Campus are normally viewed as "bad freshman dorms," but I wouldn't trade my experience there for a million dollars. The dorms have 600+ people ready to mingle and meet. I would play volleyball everyday after class or lay out on the volleyball sand. The dorms on North Campus are really nice, especially for upperclassman who want to have a great location to campus.

The bigger dorms on South Campus,...
The bigger dorms on South Campus, like Hinton James, Ehringhaus, and Craig, have people who come in and clean the bathrooms daily, except on weekends. The smaller ones like Horton (used to be Hinton James North) and Koury (used to be Ehringhaus South) that are right beside high rises are newer and more private. There are only four people to one bathroom, but you must keep them clean yourselves, and there are inspections over big breaks. If you are lazy, run late, or don't like walking, your best bet is to live in a dorm on North Campus, but chances are you will be on South Campus as an underclassmen. I lived on campus three yrs before I moved off, but I also had a large corner room for two years in Koury with great suitemates!

Live on South Campus your first...
Live on South Campus your first year. The dorms are new, and you meet a ton of people! South Campus is usually where first-years end up, anyways. |

The dorms here need renovation,...
The dorms here need renovation, and they need it soon. The only dorms you’d want to live in are the new dorms and Hinton James. I do prefer the older South Campus dorms because they are like a hotel and are open, so visitation is never a problem. |

All of the residential buildings...
All of the residential buildings on campus are pretty nice. However, some are nicer than others. Dorms to avoid are relative to what you like and don’t like. I would say avoid Whitehead because it is so far from campus. The new residential buildings on South Campus are very nice. |
