College Prowler Take
Illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy) are taken more seriously by campus police than alcohol is. During freshman orientation, students are made aware that drug use is against UNC policy and is not tolerated by campus police. Furthermore, if students are caught possessing marijuana on campus, their housing contract is terminated. If students are caught possessing illegal drugs, they face Carolina’s Honor Court, expulsion, and state court. Campus police are there to protect and serve UNC’s student body. Rarely do students consider campus police strict or threatening when it comes to alcohol. If students are caught drinking underage in the dorms, then it is possible that their housing contract could be terminated. More often than not, students are written up, possibly fined, and have to complete a certain number of community service hours. Of course, if you are being loud, obnoxious, and causing a scene, you are going to attract attention to yourself. So, if you are participating in underage drinking, be quiet about it, or do it off campus! Otherwise, you might find yourself alongside a Carolina highway picking up garbage.

All offenses are handled by the honor court, a student operated legal system, unless it's illegal in nature. Drinking is not permitted in public areas, smoking is prohibited everywhere, and the drug scene is almost non-existent.

The police go through streaks of being extremely strict and giving lots of tickets to being lax. It all depends on what period you catch them in. I think a general rule is if you aren't being extremely disruptive or doing anything stupid like walking down the street with a cup in your hand, then you should be ok.

The police can be strict or...
The police can be strict or lenient based on how you act when you are caught. Violations are usually caught first through resident advisors since most violations occur in the dorm room. As long as you are truthful and respectful to your RA, you will be OK if it's your first offense.

Campus police are completely intolerant of drugs here. Alcohol is another story. You can pretty much drink what you want when you want, as long as you don’t get rowdy and disturb the people around you. If that happens, the police get involved. |

It's Taken Seriously
C+
Rules and regulations are taken very seriously here. The police enforce underage drinking punishments the majority of the time. Chapel Hill police are more stringent than UNC police. RAs in the dorms are pretty relaxed. As long as you aren't advertising your activities you won't get caught. The honor code is a big deal here though, so be cautious.
