College Prowler Take

In 2001, UNC introduced the Carolina Computing Initiative.
It requires incoming students to either buy an IBM laptop, the official CCI computer, or bring a laptop that meets the CCI requirements. After receiving their laptops, faculty and students from Information Technology Services (ITS) help students configure their computers to the network and set up “Onyen” (Only Name You’ll Ever Need)—a username and password. This provides students with disk space, Internet access, Web pages, and a personal e-mail account with the UNC network, which uses an Ethernet connection to avoid the hassles of dial-up. Students can connect to the network in their dorms, libraries, and classrooms in seconds. Many areas on campus have wireless Internet access including the Student Union, the cafeteria, and several cafés and coffee shops on Franklin Street. UNC also has several computer labs, some of which are 24-hour labs.

If students ever run into technical trouble, finding help is easy. ITS centers are located in several dorms and the Undergraduate Library. If they need to hold a computer, students are given a loaner. If a student just has a question about their computer, he or she can simply e-mail ITS and expect an answer within an hour. Technology at Carolina is highly advanced yet understandable and convenient for students. They can access this network from anywhere and
at any time.

The computer network is OK; the wireless isn't great in some areas and messes up sometimes. The labs are usually crowded during the school day at rush times like lunch and especially between classes. You should have your own computer

The computer network here is awesome, to say the least. We have a T3 connection, so you can download music in seconds. We’re required to have a laptop computer, but student reactions are mixed in regards to this. The University always has two or three laptops that it sells in bulk to students. You really can’t go wrong buying one of these computers because they are already configured for the network, plus they come with a four-year insurance plan for just about every problem. For this reason, computer labs are never really crowded. I suggest that you look at the CCI (Carolina Computing Initiative) and buy a computer from UNC. I love mine, and it has done me a lot of good.

At UNC, all students are required to have a laptop, so you will either get a grant for one sometime during the summer, or you’ll have to buy one. You don’t have to be poor to get a grant either, so don’t jump to the conclusion that you’ll have to buy a laptop with money out of your own pocket. The computers are definitely fast, and we have 24-hour support and insurance on the laptops.
