College Prowler Take
If going Greek is something that interests you, UNC has 22 fraternities that comprise the Interfraternity Council (IFC), 10 Panhellenic sororities, eight Historical Black Fraternities and Sororities, nine in the Greek Alliance Council, two honor, and several professional fraternities. However, don’t expect to rush a fraternity or sorority and immediately start getting hammered off of rum and cokes—it just doesn’t work that way. Greeks are required to devote a certain amount of time to their organization, volunteer around the area, and sponsor activities for non-Greek students. Several of the IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities have houses close to campus, several located near Frat Court where Greeks party every weekend. To join, students have to maintain a certain GPA, be a student of the University, and be recruited by the organization. The intake policies differ for each organization, and hazing is illegal, but supposedly still happens. Only a little under 12 percent of UNC students are Greeks, so if going Greek is not for you, 88 percent of the student population feels the same way. If you are not Greek, that does not mean that you cannot attend a sorority or fraternity party, it just means that you are not committing yourself to a group. Greek or not Greek, it does not define or rule the social scene.

Greek Life is a big deal if you are Greek. Otherwise you can just do what I do---go to the frat parties and meet hot girls without having to be affiliated with any of them.

I spent my freshman year being a non-Greek but then rushed as a sophomore and joined a sorority. I have seen both sides, and I can't really say which one is better. Greek life encompasses about 20 percent of the students on campus, which makes it enough to have a face on campus but not enough to be an obnoxious face. I like it because it provides structure and focus to your campus activity and introduces you to many people. However, I would highly recommend waiting a year to rush.

Greek life will only dominate the social scene if you are involved in an organization or let it dominate. There are plenty of other groups and clubs to join. You can eventually find a group of people that you fit in and feel comfortable with. If you complain about being bored and have no one to hang out with, you must not be leaving your room and being proactive about it. |

I wouldn’t say that Greek life dominates the social scene at UNC at all, but it’s definitely worth looking into if you’re interested. I am the president of the Greek Alliance Council for all of the non-traditional Greek organizations. I am a sister of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority. It doesn’t matter what your interests are or what kind of scene you like; I think you can find what you’re looking for in a Greek organization. |

You definitely choose whether or not you want to be involved with Greek life or not. I am in a sorority and I would recommend it, especially if you are an out-of-state student. At least rush to meet people—I didn’t do it my freshman year, and I regret it because I’ve met so many people through that experience. Most students are from North Carolina, so quite a few of them stick together. Although the students here are very friendly, it can be intimidating seeing all these people who already know each other when you don’t know anyone. |
