College Prowler Take

Chapel Hill is the epitome of a college town and has everything a college student could ask for. If you like to salsa dance into the wee hours of the morning, you can. If you want to grab a beer and watch a game with hundreds of fellow students, go right ahead. UNC is not the only school in the area: Duke, NC State, and North Carolina Central University are all close by. The Robertson Scholars bus transports students between UNC and Duke free of charge. In a state that has a ton of universities, colleges, and community colleges, there’s always somewhere to go and something to do.

Of course, if you’re not interested in seeing a sporting event or partying, you can always see a movie or go shopping in one of the many nearby shopping malls. The Streets at Southpoint is one of the largest malls on the East Coast, complete with over 70 stores, dozens of restaurants, and a Cineplex. A&E ranked Chapel Hill the third best place to live on the East Coast based on the diversity of the town, the friendliness of the people, location, opportunity, and educational facilities. It’s no wonder that several publications, including Sports Illustrated, have dubbed Chapel Hill “the ideal college town.”

The atmosphere is the typical...

The atmosphere is the typical "college town." The community revolves around the campus. You can go to the mall in Durham, walk around Raleigh, or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Carrboro. However, just in Chapel Hill, there are lots of parks, shopping, and stores that are available for the students and community to enjoy together. Also, NC State and Duke are less than 20 minutes away, which allows for a lot of interaction with those two schools.

The atmosphere at UNC-Chapel Hill...

The atmosphere at UNC-Chapel Hill is fairly quiet, but there are certainly activities that one can engage in as well. The majority of the town is basically the University, but Franklin Street has popular spots for the students and visitors that come to Chapel Hill.

The town, or surrounding area,...

The town, or surrounding area, shuts down at 9 p.m. every day basically. This is by no means a bustling city or anything close. It's just a nice little po-dunk town that's highly concentrated with students, so house parties are common.

For a southern town, it isn't bad, but it isn't metropolitan at all---no comparison. There are places to go, like bars and movies, and there is a small artistic community if you search. Certain streets are shabby and known for drugs and violence.

Chapel Hill is a genuine college town. I would say that it is very student-friendly. There is a lot to do on campus or nearby. Buses are great for transporting students to places off campus. Also, being within driving distance from Durham (Duke) and Raleigh (NC State) is amazing because there are three cities and universities at your fingertips. We’re three hours from the beach and three hours from the mountains. It’s really a prime location.
