College Prowler Take
The strip of clubs and bars along Franklin Street during the beginning of each semester can seem like South Beach. However, once the school year progresses, many students tend to fall back and concentrate on their studies. Clubs, sororities, or fraternities regularly sponsor campus parties or rent out local clubs for mixers. University-sponsored parties are fun but rare. The real nightlife is off campus. Rosemary Street, the backside of Franklin Street, has several clubs that cater to different crowds. Most clubs are 18-and-over, but a few are 21-and-over for the older crowd. Club Element is a large club complete with two dance floors, a game room, and a bar that caters to the hip-hop crowd. The Treehouse has theme nights throughout the week. All the clubs have bars, and valid ID is required to drink. All of the bars and clubs serve as a great place to meet people. Clubs are safe and fun. But if you can’t make it to the club, you’ll always be able to find a frat party, an apartment party, or even dorm room parties. At Chapel Hill, you will never be bored on the weekends. From Thursday night through Monday morning, you’ll have plenty to do. I’d invest in an alarm clock if I were you.

Parties on campus are usually held...
Parties on campus are usually held in the Great Hall or the Cabaret. I've been to a couple of parties on campus, and they are usually a lot of fun. I like the parties on campus rather than parties at the club because you do not have to deal with everybody smoking around you. The clubs off campus are cool as well. I have been to Mansions, White Bar, and Players, and they all have their distinct differences; however most parties are held at White Bar.

There are parties at the frat...
There are parties at the frat houses a lot, and many people to go to the clubs and bars. Overall, most people like the party life. You start your weekends a day early on Thursdays, and you have fun, drink, and dance, and party.

House parties are always too loud...
House parties are always too loud and get busted, plus the keg line is reminiscent of Disneyland in the summer. Bars are always a blast, and the clubs are usually popping after 10 or so. However, fights have broken at these parts over girls or some other drama, so go with a few friends to make sure people know you are cool.

Parties on campus are typical....
Parties on campus are typical. There is alcohol, even though I don't think there is supposed to be. But there is a plethora of bars on Franklin Street close to campus. And there are clubs you can get into on Thursday and Friday nights with a college ID, so you should be set.

Lots of Options!
A
Lots of upperclassmen live off campus in houses or apartments, so any given weekend there are tons of parties going on around campus. Parties are the best places to meet and mingle, but if you want to go out and have fun, there are lots of bars on Franklin Street - Goodfella's, Carolina Coffee Shop, Top of the Hill, etc. Lots of freshman and sophomores go to Player's, a club on Franklin St. It's a must-do-before-you-graduate experience (though it's pretty sketchy!). There's also plenty of great local music venues, like Local 506 and Cat's Cradle. Citizen Cope, for example, just played at Cat's Cradle a few weeks ago. There's a bus that runs all around campus until 3am (the P2P, or point to point) and other "safe ride" buses too. And lots of restaurants serve until 2am, which is great if you get the munchies! Overall, I'd say if you're underage, go to a house party and experience Player's at least once! If you're over 21, bars are a great place to go hang out with friends.

For late night dancing, drinking, and hanging out, some of the best nightclubs are located less than a mile away from campus. Students consider Thursday the start of the weekend and the wee hours of Monday morning the end. These are some of the best clubs in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh.
Bar Prowler
There are several bars in Chapel Hill. Students are good for seeking out drink specials, so the bars with the best atmosphere and the cheapest drinks are usually the ones students frequent.
Organization Parties
Many organizations on campus will rent out restaurants or nightclubs and advertise their parties on campus through flyers and word-of-mouth. These are some of the best parties to go to if you want to hang out with a predominantly UNC crowd. Fraternities and sororities often rent out nightclubs after rush or initiation.
Club Listings
This upscale club features live music and entertainment. This facility is also available to campus organizations and rented out for parties and other events.
Players has been a mainstay for several years and continues to be a favorite. It boasts a large dance floor, a bar, and a lounge with a pool table. There is a dress-code—no jerseys or tennis shoes. There is a new drink every weekend. The club is mainly 21-and-over, but there are a few 18-and-over nights. The cover is no more than $15 and drinks are extra. Players 159½ E. Franklin St. (919) 929-0101
This coffeeshop has one of the coziest atmospheres of any coffee shop on Franklin Street. During the day, breakfast is served until 2 p.m. At 9 p.m. all the elderly people are heaved out into the street and the restaurant turns into a bar with live music and large, rowdy crowds. Because of the delicious mixed drinks and imported beers, students often come here and dance and chat the night away. Carolina Coffee Shop 138 E. Franklin St. (919) 942-6875
This sports bar and lounge features large flat-screen TVs and projectors. Different nights feature different events, like iPod Tuesdays (hook up your iPod to their system and the best five songs gets a bar tab) and Jazz Thursdays.
Bar Listings
Goodfellows is a restaurant by day and a bar by night. During the day, Goodfellows serves Italian food: pizza, pasta, calzones, strombolis, and hoagies. During the night Goodfellows serves some of the most delicious and reasonably priced drinks. If you are interested in hanging out with your friends, meeting some new people, and grabbing a bite to eat, Goodfellows is open every weekday from 10 a.m.–11 p.m. and every weekend from 11 a.m.–2 a.m.
He’s Not Here is unique because most of it is outdoors, which is great for those warm summer nights, but not so cool on those wet and rainy days. This place is great for serving cheap drinks—the 32-ounce Big Blue Cup, refillable for $3, is about the cheapest you’ll pay for a drink in Chapel Hill. The only drink served here is beer, and kegs are placed outside to diminish the long lines on the inside. There’s always live music on the weekends when local bands play a variety of music. He’s Not Here 112 ½ W. Franklin St. (919) 942-7939
Rum Runners has two bars: dueling pianos in the main bar and live entertainment in the back bar. College students can partake in the ultimate fight song challenge. There are nightly drink specials. Make reservations because there is limited seating available.
This is the place to go if you’re trying to get away from the undergrad-filled nightclubs and bars. The West End Wine Bar has a romantic atmosphere. After 9:30 p.m. on the rooftop terrace, a local jazz or acoustic act plays light music. Pick from over 50 wine selections and swirl your drink all night long. West End Wine Bar 450 W. Franklin St. (919) 967-7599
Voted "Best Brewpub in the Southeast" by Brewpub magazine.
The Cat’s Cradle is known for its good music, with appearances by Nirvana, the Smashing Pumpkins, and John Mayer. Tickets are available at the door, at www.etix.com, or at Schoolkids Records. Try your talent at open-mic night.
The Cave is known for its laid-back atmosphere—the crowd consists of jeans and T-shirts. Local bands perform nightly. There’s a pool table, a beer bar (domestics, imports, and microbrews), and you’re more than welcome to bring your dog. Make sure to be ready for clean-up, though!
What to Do if You're Not 21
Dance on one of their 18-and-over nights. You’ll have to provide a valid college I.D. if you’re under 21. If you’re over 21 and wish to drink, you’ll have to provide a college ID and driver’s license.
It’s guaranteed at Element that every Friday night is 18-and-over, and most Saturdays are 18-and-over. The only time that Club Element would change the age limit is if an organization rents it out for the night and wants an age limit. Players 159 1/2 E. Franklin St. Chapel Hill (919) 929-0101
This facility is available to campus organizations and rented out for parties and other events.
