College Prowler Take

Some students choose to move off campus after their freshman year, while others choose more wisely. The Chapel Hill/Durham area has plenty of moderately priced apartments available, but these will still be there when you start your junior year. The majority of UNC students recommend staying on campus for the first two years then moving off campus for the final two. These students feel that the booming social environment, cheaper rent, and the close proximity to classroom buildings are all things that should discourage apartment seekers from departing campus. However, off-campus student housing attempts to emulate dorm life.

Granville Towers is a student apartment complex located on Franklin Street within walking distance from campus. Many students, freshmen included, choose to live there because it has a cafeteria, a pool, basketball courts, and parking. Even though the Towers are technically off campus, some people consider it a dorm. If you’re looking to get away from dorm life completely, there are condominiums, townhomes, and apartments throughout the area located as close as five minutes or as far as 30 minutes away. Rent ranges anywhere from $360–$800 a month per person. If you have the time and patience to survey the apartments and seek out a good deal, you could pay the same amount as you would to live on campus. It all depends on your price range.

It's less expensive, but you miss out on a lot of campus stuff. There is always something going on, and off-campus housing tends to require a bus ride home instead of just walking, which means you miss the best stuff. It's not as bad if you have a car though. Pricing on the whole is cheap but varies widely: $500-$1200 for a one-bedroom, $650-$1300 for a two-bedroom, etc. You can find plenty of reasonable housing, but since Chapel Hill has the best high schools in the state, there are also lots of upscale luxury places.

Durham and Chapel Hill are pretty...

Durham and Chapel Hill are pretty much "university" towns and therefore cater largely to college students. There are plenty of apartment complexes and a free bus line that makes commuting easier.

The biggest benefit to living off campus is being able to have a car and knowing that you’ll always have a parking space. I lived on campus for two years and now live off campus, and I have loved it both on and off campus. There are many great apartments within walking distance from campus, but apartment living is definitely more expensive than the dorms.

Off-campus housing is relatively...

Off-campus housing is relatively convenient as far as walking is concerned. However, having a car makes living off campus an even more enticing option. Some people who have moved off campus say it is great, based on the privacy, space, and the pleasure of having your own personal bathroom. However, others wished they had stayed on campus due to the excess bills and traveling that come with having your own place. On campus versus off campus depends on the person and what they are willing to sacrifice.

Off-campus housing in Chapel Hill...

Off-campus housing in Chapel Hill is not only expensive, but definitely not worth it. However, there are a few complexes in nearby Carrboro and Durham that provide nicer facilities, student deals, and more affordable and comfortable housing. But apartment shopping, like anywhere else, is definitely hard.
