Parking Permits

Faculty, graduate students, and undergrad students (other than freshmen) get priority selection of parking permits. Upperclassmen who live more than two miles off campus have a better chance of receiving a parking permit than a student who lives on campus. It is very rare for freshmen and sophomores to obtain a parking permit on campus. They usually receive off-campus parking passes. Due to the overwhelming demand and limited availability, students must apply for a parking permit and enter a lottery drawing to obtain a spot. If a student does not receive a parking permit in the lottery, he or she can put his or her name on a waitlist. If a student does not receive a parking permit from the waitlist, he or she can go to the Department of Public Safety and purchase whatever permits are left over.

College Prowler Take

Every semester, students who are eligible for a parking permit enter a lottery. Students receive a permit based on seniority and location from campus. For instance, a senior who lives two or more miles from campus is more likely to receive a permit than a sophomore who lives on Middle Campus. Freshmen are not allowed to bring their cars to campus, and are not eligible to enter the parking lottery. For those students who are not lucky enough to win a permit in the lottery, UNC offers an off-campus lot, and transit to and from the lot. However, permits for this lot, like on-campus parking, are distributed based on seniority and the student’s location from campus. Parking permits are not guaranteed to everyone. A disturbing statistic: there are over 15,000 undergraduate students on campus fighting for a little over 3,000 parking spaces each day. Moreover, some of these are reserved parking, service parking, or metered parking.

If you’re a freshman, don’t even think about bringing a car.
As a sophomore—well, good luck. Bottom line: when applying for a parking spot, the competition is tougher than applying to get into UNC. Parking becomes more difficult every year. With the downsizing of some lots in order to build new student facilities, the situation doesn’t seem to be getting better.

Parking in Chapel Hill--you must be joking. Simply put, its a pain. First years cannot park on campus, but parking is available off campus for a few. After that you enter a lottery. Grad students and married students are guaranteed parking next to their apartments, though. The bus system is amazing, so that makes up for a lack of parking. There are also Zipcars for short-term rentals. If you are commuting to campus, parking is easier, and you can use meters and pay-by-the-hour parking decks.

Freshmen cannot bring cars, and parking is truly a nightmare. Some students park in parking lots of friends' apartment complexes, but that's an extreme. I'd just use the PR lot, which is a univerisity off-campus parking lot. You have to ride a bus there, but you don't have to worry about tickets.

Parking is terrible here! We really need to build some parking decks for students so we don’t get ticketedso much. I’m currently looking into getting a handicap sticker.

The parking scene is in need of serious updating and remodeling. Parking spaces are very limited here on campus and continue to be a problem year after year.

Parking at UNC is horrible! Honestly, the parking is one of the only things that I don’t like about UNC. There’s no place to park, and if you do happen to get a spot, you’ll probably get a ticket. Campus police have nothing to do other than ticket poor college students trying to go to the library.
