College Prowler Take
The safety and security of students is a top priority for UNC officials. The Department of Public Safety heads a first-rate division of police, security, and emergency services that ensures that students live in a safe and secure environment. Public Safety and Community Oriented Policing (COP) keep Chapel Hill safe under a warm and cozy protective blanket. Security guards and campus police patrol the campus and streets 24 hours a day. In case of an emergency, blue-lights are located all over the campus. In case of a medical emergency, UNC Hospital is located on campus. Firearms are illegal at UNC, further ensuring the security of students. If a student is caught with a gun, he or she faces immediate expulsion. Every dorm requires two keys—one to enter the residence hall and one for your room. A call box is located outside for visitors. P2P Shuttle, P2P On Demand, Safe Shuttle, and Safe Ride are for students who are out late studying, partying, or hanging out with friends. Of course, students have to exercise caution around campus. The biggest crime committed against UNC students is larceny. Students are advised to lock their dorm rooms and not to leave computers and personal belongings out of their sight. However, with UNC Public Safety, personal responsibility, and a little student vigilance, the greatest danger to UNC students is that they might take their college years for granted.

Security is getting better, since the scare that occurred a year ago. I don't really stress it because I see cops on like every corner, usually writing parking tickets, but none the less they are there.

I feel pretty safe on campus. There is an "AlertCarolina" system that's in place. I'm not 100 percent confident in the system, but I don't particularly worry either. There isn't a lot of crime, but there is crime. Just as in other place, things happen from time to time. Campus police can be found pretty often.

Security at UNC is excellent. I have never felt afraid or threatened at any time except for the occasional stalker ex-girlfriend. The blue-light system is here, but it’s never really used because safety is rarely a problem. |

Campus seems to be pretty safe, for the most part. I feel fine running downstairs or out to my car while leaving my dorm room unlocked. I don’t feel threatened when walking alone from North to South Campus at night. |

Security and safety is definitely...
Security and safety is definitely an area that UNC seems to take seriously. Because of the amount of women enrolled, as well as for the concern of all students’ well being, UNC has incorporated security posts every couple yards where, at the touch of a button, campus security will arrive in a few minutes. P2P, the transportation system after 7 p.m., is also a reliable source that aids students. Not only do the P2P buses run until 3 a.m., but if you need a safe ride home afterwards, you only need to call the P2P number, and a personal P2P van will arrive. |
