No matter how you look at it, the term “Fighting Irish” goes beyond the realm of athletics, but make no mistake about it, sports are a huge part of life at Notre Dame. Whether it’s on the playing field or in the stands, Notre Dame students love a good fight. Sports are a part of the Notre Dame tradition. Most students play sports, have played sports, love sports, or are learning to love them here. Whether varsity or intramural, students flock to watch and participate in Notre Dame athletics. With varsity sports ranging from water polo to football, and IM sports including figure skating and basketball, there’s certainly much more to do here than study. If Notre Dame wasn’t a Catholic university, it would be religiously affiliated with sports. Notre Dame is the epitome of the college athletic tradition. Students here do not sit during football or basketball games. They bathe themselves in Kelly green paint, spell out IRISH on bared bodies, and will spend four hours standing in the snow to watch the Fighting Irish play. And believe me, they’ll play anything. From inter-hall football to horseshoes, there’s a sport for anyone willing to participate. The spirit, determination, student participation, and the expansive program vaults Notre Dame’s athletics into a champion’s spot.

Varsity sports at Notre Dame are a pretty big deal, clearly. Students, parents, and alumni live and die for football weekends and all that comes with it (dressing up, touring campus, tailgating, etc.), and there is still a fair turnout for other athletic events. Intramural sports are huge too, and Notre Dame is one of few universities to provide full-on tackle football as an intramural sport.

Come on, this is Notre Dame!...
Come on, this is Notre Dame! Football practically has its own religious denomination on campus. If you’re a varsity athlete, you are worshipped and loved by everyone. The reason for this is because, overall, Notre Dame students are extremely athletic and know what it takes to be a varsity athlete. |

Varsity sports are HUGE. Football, of course, rules the fall. IM football is a lot of fun to both play and watch. If football isn’t your thing, there are tons of other activities that lots of people get involved in. Anything you want to get involved in you can either find or start up yourself. |

Sports are huge at ND. Hello, we are the Fighting Irish! Football rules, by far. Varsity sports are huge, and so are IM sports. Most students were involved in athletics in high school, so they continue them in some form at ND. I played IM soccer and I loved it! You make so many more friends and it’s good competition, but at a level that the normal ND student can handle. |

Huge—Notre Dame is one of the top jock schools in the country. Football games are all-day events; it’s a lot of fun and everyone goes. It’s huge. Most of the competition for intramural sports can be seen in inter-hall games. You place for your residence hall and there are some fierce rivalries, especially in dorm football. Notre Dame is the only school that plays intramural tackle football. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Also Available - Eck Tennis Center, Loftus Center, Notre Dame Golf Course, St. Joseph Beach, and Warren Golf Course
- Joyce Center - The Joyce Center (JACC) plays a variety of roles. It’s well-used for both varsity sports and commercial events, yet it’s also a well-equipped gym. Included among the facilities are five courts for basketball and volleyball, four racquetball courts, faculty fitness and locker rooms, an ice rink, jogging lanes, a varsity shop, and boxing rooms. However, the JACC’s use for varsity sports and events leaves limited hours for recreational availability. Unless they have an athletic class in this building, most students prefer to workout elsewhere.
- Knute Rockne Memorial - Affectionately known as “the Rock,” this facility is dedicated to the memory of Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne. The lower level is recently renovated, and building amenities include a fitness room with cardio and select weight equipment, a weight room, two courts for basketball and volleyball, a 25-yard pool and shallow exercise pool, activity rooms for fitness and dance classes, and a climbing wall. Although the Rock is well-equipped, most students find its gothic architecture discomforting. Overall, the Rock is not a social gym.
- Rolfs Sports Recreation Center and Aquatic Center - Rolfs Sports Recreation Center is the University’s newest recreation facility, and by far the most popular. It houses a fitness room with cardio and strength-training equipment; three courts for basketball, volleyball, and badminton; a multi-purpose court for soccer, handball, in-line hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball, an 1/8-mile suspended running track, pool tables, and table tennis; activity rooms for fitness and dance classes; and the health and fitness resource center. With its state-of-the-art facilities and social environment, Rolfs is the perfect place to go for fitness or otherwise.
