Quick Stats

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Drug possession
  • Drug usage
  • Having Sex

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students agree that you can basically drink as much as you want around Notre Dame and have little to worry about from campus authorities. At worst, the consequences will be about as severe as a slap on the wrist. On the other end of the spectrum, however, the penalties for both drug use and sex on campus are expulsion. Most students didn’t complain about the University’s priorities, though they are noticeably different from many other schools.

The bottom line? Drink if you like, but don’t use drugs or get caught fooling around. The lenient alcohol policy leaves plenty of room for students to have fun; however, there are hefty fines for overindulgence. Students are expected to be responsible, and there is supervision—if you can’t keep things behind closed doors, you will get in trouble for it. Make sure you consider the consequences before you do anything on campus. Don’t push things too far and you should be just fine.

Controlled but Reasonable

Notre Dame strikes a perfect balance between enforcing regulations and letting students have fun. While there is supposedly zero tolerance for drugs and parietals are strictly enforced, most students (myself included) don't mind. Most of us frown upon drug use anyway and like how parietals quiet down the dorms to allow everyone to sleep. (This is especially important in men's dorms where all of the parties are.) The alcohol policy, however, is quite lenient. The consequences of breaking the rules are fairly minor and are not always enforced. Parties can be held in men's dorms as long as they aren't out of control and no one is in danger of being hurt. In summary, be safe and relatively discreet and you should be fine. One final thing to note is that the RAs are more like friends/mentors than authority figures. While they do what is necessary to keep the students safe, they are considered friends by almost all of the students.

Notre Dame allows some great Dorm parties for the younger crowd, and I enjoy the single-gender dorm set-up. Parietals (No-one of the opposite sex allowed in your room from 12AM-9AM weekdays, 2AM-9AM Weekends) are strictly enforced and I find this rule to be over the top.

Drinking, Ok. Sleepovers, No.

Notre Dame is incredibly lenient when it comes to drinking (yes, even underage) on campus. The onus is put on RA's (who are some of your best friends) and rectors (who usually don't care at all) to reign in unacceptable behavior. Therefore, if you're not really stupid about it you shouldn't have any problem drinking or having parties whenever you please. On the other hand, don't plan on having girls stay over every night. Once visitation hours are over, it's fairly easy to keep a girl in your room and not get caught, but you're screwed once you finally do.
