College Prowler Take

A few words of wisdom to all you procrastinators: if you have a project due during finals week that requires completion in a computer cluster, make sure you have a gallon of coffee in hand, because you’ll need it just to stay awake while you stand in line. Although Notre Dame provides nine computer clusters, four of which are open 24 hours a day, students agree that trying to gain access to a computer during midterms and finals week is a very difficult task. During the rest of the school year, however, most of the students say the network is fantastic. Probably the favorite aspect of the network is the speedy Internet service in both clusters and dorm rooms. While everyone says that it’s not impossible to survive without your own computer, having your own is highly recommended. After all, it’s so much more fun to Instant Message friends from the comfort of your dorm room than a computer lab.

Although there is no way to argue against the freedom, convenience, and comfort of privacy that comes with having your own computer, the number of computer clusters, the existence of clusters in dorms, and the availability of Internet access in dorm rooms makes Notre Dame’s computer network highly efficient. Just remember that it will be hard breezing in and out of computer labs during mid-terms or finals.

Having your own computer is convenient, especially when it’s cold outside and during exams. The labs can get crowded during midterms and finals, but other than that, you can get a computer whenever you need one.

It’s a good idea to have your own computer, but you can survive without one. Keep in mind that computer labs get crowded when big projects are due. If you don’t have your own computer, make sure you don’t procrastinate until the last second or you’ll be fighting for a space in the lab.

Definitely bring your own...

Definitely bring your own computer. Computer labs are usually crowded, but definitely handy. The network is usually decent—I know nothing about technology, but I think it’s okay.

The computer labs at ND are okay except during midterms or finals week. I worked at a lab for a year and I hated those weeks. The printers would jam and there would be lines forever and a day long. If you have a computer and a printer, bring them.

The network is nice, but it comes across problems from time to time. Stay away from clusters during midterms and finals. Otherwise you’ll probably always find a free one somewhere.
