Grads Entering Job MarketAdvice
- Most counselors will tell you that it is imperative to apply for and attain internships as soon as possible. Basically, you are expected to make yourself look good on paper. Most students begin to apply for internships the summer before their junior year. Now, around January of your sophomore year, all your friends will be freaking out, begging professors for letters of recommendation, and competing against each other for coveted positions. If by chance you don’t get an internship right away, don’t freak out. There are hundreds of opportunities, you just have to know where to look. Start looking early. Notre Dame has a Career Center that is widely underused. If you prepare a preliminary résumé and take it into the center, someone will sit with you and help you spice it up, no matter how boring you might think it is. The Career Center also has the names of thousands of different companies and lists of careers that you can pursue with your major. You’ll be surprised at the possibilities. Also, there is an Internet service that allows Notre Dame students to post their résumés and look for jobs online. Finally, as simple as it sounds, read all of your e-mail! Both the Career Center and the academic departments send out mass e-mails detailing available scholarships and internships.
