College Prowler Take

Both the dating scene and male-female relations at Notre Dame are seriously different from many other schools you may look at—especially large, public schools, or schools in more urban settings. With single-sex dorms and parietals firmly in place, guys and girls are kept apart from the beginning and largely tend to stay that way. With the exception of group projects, nights out, or the rare couple that is actually dating, members of the opposite sex don’t interact often. Typically, anyone who walks through the student center can see groups of guys and girls in distinctly different places—kind of like those dances you used to go to in middle school.

Although female students rated the guys at Notre Dame quite highly, men did not have quite the same praise for the girls. The stereotypical Notre Dame guy is both intelligent and hot, while girls apparently run the gamut from uptight to simply unattractive. However, it’s likely you’ll find plenty of exceptions to both of these standards. While the Notre Dame social scene is quite skewed, it hasn’t been pronounced dead on arrival—you will see the occasional serious couple walking arm-in-arm, and hookups are not really uncommon.

Now, I don't know where these...

Now, I don't know where these girls found these good-looking guys. Not on campus for sure. For the brain they got it, but for the face, that is zero. If that wasn't enough, they are mostly scared of girls. As for dressing code, they shouldn't be complaining as they do just like most of the girls: sweatpants and $5 T-shirts, I have even seen some guys with light purple, orange, dirty green, or other similar odd color jeans. Coming from NYC, this is just a disaster.

As a guy, I can say that most guys are pretty good looking. A survey from somewhere ranked Notre Dame as the third best school for guys. As far as girls, I think they were at 163 or something. There are some very nice girls and a couple of attractive girls, but if you are looking for cute girls, go somewhere else.

You will be disappointed with Notre Dame if you’re going to college for a great or liberal social scene. There are lots of very old-school Catholic people, and many do not care about their looks.

ND guys are hot, jocky, and may act like typical a-holes, but they are nice and caring underneath. ND girls are very nice (the b!tch is rare here!). Word has it that recently the girls have gotten better looking. Personally, I think there are many gorgeous girls here. Both guys and girls dress down for class. It is very, very common to see most people sporting ND sweatpants, an ND T-shirt, and for girls: Uggs. It is almost a uniform here. When the weather is nice, girls tend to dress more nicely, whereas most all guys keep up the athletic apparel.

Social Scene

The social scene at Notre Dame tends to be a little different than what you might find at most other universities. Since a vast majority of Notre Dame students hail from all over the country, most of them are very eager to meet new people. Most everyone around campus is friendly and willing to engage in conversation. Capitalizing on every chance you get to meet and befriend new people is one of the most important aspects of attending Notre Dame. Some of the people you will meet in the most random of places could turn out to be one of your best friends for the rest of your life.

Hookups or Relationships?

Most students at Notre Dame are busy throughout most of the school year, so there really isn't time for long-term commitments. Although relationships do occur, hookups are typically more frequent and noticeable on campus.

Dress Code

Notre Dame's school newspaper, The Observer, once featured an article discussing the student's unofficial dress code. In this article, the author outlined the image of the average ND student: designer jeans, crew neck sweaters, leather jackets, pea coats, and shoulder strap back packs. The fact is that a walk through campus can often feel like a glimpse through the latest J. Crew catalog. Although there are a few brave souls who dare to make unique fashion statements, the majority of the Notre Dame community opts for a casual conservative look on a daily basis. However, when the lights go down, the party comes alive with students ditching the confines of preppiness for a much more outgoing, and sometimes revealing, look. During the winter, pretty much anything goes. A Notre Dame favorite among both guys and girls is the hoodie and sweatpants combination. It’s hard to walk down the quad without seeing one or the other on nearly every student.
