These days, the thought of living in a safe neighborhood where no one locks their doors is just a memory of a time that existed on black and white television sets. But it seems that Notre Dame belongs back in the good old days. Aside from the occasional sneaky drunkard clumsily stealing a bike in the middle of the night, the majority of students agree: there is virtually no crime under the Golden Dome. Besides football weekends, many Notre Dame students say that they leave their dorm rooms unlocked. And thanks to the small size of the campus, the presence of Notre Dame security, the blue-light phones, and student organizations such as ND SafeWalk, most students confess to strolling along campus at all hours of the night without a care in the world.

South Bend, however, is a stark contrast to campus. Students recommend avoiding many areas of the small industrial city, and some describe incidents where other students have had problems with theft or muggings while in South Bend. But most agree that these things can be avoided-stay away from particular neighborhoods. While the Notre Dame campus is virtually crime-free, the atmosphere of the surrounding South Bend area brings down an otherwise top grade.
