College Prowler Take

While many say that a Notre Dame education will make a student a well-rounded person, students agree that an evening dining out in South Bend is not likely to be a cultural experience. Although there are a few unique places such as Fondue! and Tippecanoe downtown. A night of off campus dining is more likely to include dinner at one of the many chain restaurants that dominate the area. Students have, however, found a few non-chain restaurants that have become favorite places to eat the college staples of pizza, burgers, and late-night burritos. And they don’t seem to mind too much that ethnic foods aren’t in abundance.

The chain restaurant choices don’t gain points, but student satisfaction with these restaurants helps to minimize any point deductions a bit. Students that wish to eat off campus but have no transportation can call Dine-In Delivery, even though they will have to wait 50-80 minutes. Ultimately, even though the chain restaurants may make some feel at home, students are offered more variety at a lesser price in the dining hall.

There are some pretty good places off-campus; my favorite is Papa Vino’s for a nicer environment with excellent pasta. Then, there’s Tippecanoe, which is an old mansion converted into a restaurant, and a Japanese hibachi/sushi restaurant with pretty good sushi. And finally, there’s an Outback, a Lone Star Steakhouse, a Steak ‘n Shake, and an Olive Garden.

To be honest, the restaurants in South Bend are just like restaurants in any other town. There aren’t many good Mexican restaurants, but what can you expect from the Midwest?

All the restaurants are over on Grape Road, which isn’t far. There are classics like the Olive Garden and Steak ‘n Shake, but my personal favorite is Famous Dave’s BBQ—excellent!

If you want a fancy meal go to Tippecanoe Place. For those of age, nothing beats a burger at CJ’s Pub. Roccos pizza is really good—especially when you’re sick of Papa John’s.

Like any town, South Bend has fast...

Like any town, South Bend has fast food and places like the Olive Garden, Friday’s, Chili’s and the Outback. There are also several good pizza places such as Bruno’s, some Italian places like Papa Vino’s, a few steak restaurants like the Rib Shack and Tippecanoe’s, and oriental food at Mandarin House and Golden Dragon. The phone book is chock full of fun places to eat. While I haven’t tried every place, I haven’t had anything that wasn’t good.
