College Prowler Take
These days, the thought of living in a safe neighborhood where no one locks their doors is just a memory of a time that existed on black and white television sets. But it seems that Notre Dame belongs back in the good old days. Aside from the occasional sneaky drunkard clumsily stealing a bike in the middle of the night, the majority of students agree: there is virtually no crime under the Golden Dome. Besides football weekends, many Notre Dame students say that they leave their dorm rooms unlocked. And thanks to the small size of the campus, the presence of Notre Dame security, the blue-light phones, and student organizations such as ND SafeWalk, most students confess to strolling along campus at all hours of the night without a care in the world. South Bend, however, is a stark contrast to campus. Students recommend avoiding many areas of the small industrial city, and some describe incidents where other students have had problems with theft or muggings while in South Bend. But most agree that these things can be avoided—stay away from particular neighborhoods. While the Notre Dame campus is virtually crime-free, the atmosphere of the surrounding South Bend area brings down an otherwise top grade.

As for as safety, I would have to say I felt safer at ND than I have ever felt in my hometown of El Paso. Maybe it’s because at ND, we were in our own little bubble and things like safety were taken for granted. I never once had a second thought about walking alone at night on campus. I’m glad I didn’t have to think about that. |

The ND Security is actually really great at keeping Notre Dame a quiet and safe campus. They patrol campus by car, bike, and ATV, and are quick to respond to any reported trouble. If you are worried about walking at night from one end of campus to the other, they will gladly give you a ride. They will also give you a ride from your dorm to the bus stop and vice versa, if you live at the opposite end of campus or if the weather is really cold. |

I feel very safe on campus. While I would not go running by myself late at night, I don’t feel uncomfortable walking across campus by myself in the evenings. We have a SafeWalk program where someone will walk with you if you want them to accompany you to your destination. Our campus is compact enough that you really don’t have to go far to get anywhere though, so I don’t feel the need to use the buddy system. |

The campus is pretty safe. I leave my door unlocked all the time and I never feel threatened walking around at night. They have a program called SafeWalk—if you’re out there somewhere and don’t want to walk by yourself, just call and they come and walk with you. It’s free. |

Safety couldn’t be better. The school offers much in regard to student safety. In fact, I’ve been told by just about everyone I know here that they honestly have no worries at all about on-campus safety. My sister walks around the lakes at one in the morning with no problems at all. |
