Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Shuttle buses
  • Taxi cabs
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the Airport costs anywhere between $7 a person (if you’re sharing the cab) to $20 dollars for one person.
  • South Bend Regional Airport is located about 5 miles, or a 20–30 minute drive, from the University. The easiest way to get there is to take Route 31, south of Notre Dame, to the Lincoln Highway West. From there, make a right onto Maplewood Ave., a left onto Commerce Dr., and then another left onto Progress Dr. Then follow the airport signs straight ahead.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although the phrase “public transportation” brings to mind bad images for many people, students agree that the cost helps you to overlook the conditions—buses are actually free with your Notre Dame ID. Unfortunately, the bus lines don’t go to many places that students want to visit. Use them to see the mall or to get out of town for awhile. The constant presence of taxi cabs on campus is a definite plus, especially on weekends. Rides off campus are a mere two dollars, and you can get to some of the best party spots this way. It’s best to split a cab with friends, not only because of the reduced rates but because it’s easier to cope with the near-death experience of a taxi ride this way.

As far as availability and affordability, there’s little to complain about with Notre Dame’s public transit. Perhaps the greatest part of it, however, is that it is largely unneeded. The University’s facilities make trips off campus fairly rare occurrences, other than for visiting the occasional bar or party. With the availability of student parking, automobiles remain the rides of choice whenever you do have to leave campus. If you ever need to get somewhere, however, it’s good to know that you have the option.

Just Ok.

Anywhere on campus is a 15-minute walk maximum. Going off campus would require a cab, which is very easy to call, although the cabbies aren't always friendly. There are bus routes to downtown South Bend. The nearby South Bend Airport has some connections and others can fly into Chicago and take a bus to Notre Dame. Around breaks, there are usually buses that take large amounts of students to large cities, such as Philadelphia, etc.

Lots of Options

Between taxis, zip cars, free buses, trains, and charter buses to Chicago and the airports, it's very simple and effortless to get to Chicago. The tricky thing is that the bus, if not express to Chicago takes a good amount of time, while the train (the South Shore Line) doesn't have enough departure or arrival times to always be an option for travel. The South Bend Airport does have a reputation of having flights (especially United) get canceled from Chicago, but if you're coming in good weather, you shouldn't have an issue, and the airport is 10 minutes from campus.

Cabs Are Plentiful, Buses Are Free

Rides off campus are cheap via cabs. Downtown South Bend is a 25 minute walk off campus. Cabs are 7-10$ to the airport and the bus provides a free option to get to the airport. Many students have never used public transportation before and do not understand how to properly get around. If you take the initiative to know the town and the transportation options, you can get anywhere for free.
