Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At the University of Oklahoma, football isn’t just a sport, it is a religion. Starting in August, the students and OU fans file like zombies to their temple (Gaylord Memorial Stadium) and worship the football team that they love so much. Not only is OU’s football team one of the main reasons that people get up in the morning, they are also quite profitable to the town merchants and business establishments. That’s why game days really are a good time. Fans set up tents along Lindsay Street, drink beer, and cook out. You can walk anywhere around the stadium and expect to get offered a hot dog and some beer from a keg. Parties after the games are fun, too. That is, unless, God forbid, the football team loses—don’t expect anyone to be in a pleasant mood afterwards.

All sports at OU are a big deal, including IM sports, but those are mostly run by fraternities and sororities. OU students do place a lot of weight on athletic events. However, you shouldn’t feel left out if you cannot manage to parlay football into a reason for living. There are plenty of students here who don’t go to the games and could care less about the outcome of the game. I just wouldn’t suggest admitting it
to anyone.

You have to love OU athletics. Football is definitely a big thing here, every home game day is packed with things to do. More than that, the new OU basketball coach is making big progress with his team and with attendance at games.

Very Big

If you love sports then the University of Oklahoma is for you. We have state of the art facilities, and our teams are part of our Sooner legacy. Football, Basketball, Hockey, Rowing. And even if we don't have a team, we definitely have a club that has it.

I feel like everyone makes a big deal out of athletic events when it comes to major sports because that is what our school is known for but most people do not pay much attention to smaller sports and neither does the school itself. However the student involvement in athletic events is very high.

Getting Tickets

Season tickets to football games may be hard to come by, especially for freshmen. It is not uncommon for a lottery to be created because of the high demand for season tickets. It is quite easy to find tickets to an individual game, but with games like OU-OSU and OU-Texas, tickets are gone in minutes.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Around campus or Chautauqua, by the Museum of Natural History.

Did You Know? The OU Sooners have won 26 national championships in men's and women's sports with the latest coming in 2008 when the men's gymnastics team won its fifth title in seven years.
