Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, the dorms at OU hardly resemble the Ritz-Carlton, but they are comfortable and decent places to live. Most dorms give you the options of a shared bathroom between four students of the same sex and bunked or regular beds. Here is some advice on the bed situation: when given the choice of bunk beds or regular beds, it is tempting to choose the first because of all the extra space you will have in your room. Now let’s get real, it’s a dorm room, what are you planning to do in there, run sprints? Take it from someone who knows; it is completely uncomfortable for someone to crawl up into the ceiling to sleep, unless you are five years old. Also, it’s especially taxing to get up there after a night of drinking, and equally as hard to make it to class the next morning—skipping class is a lot more tempting when you’re suspended 10 feet in the air.

In any case, don’t stress out about the dorms. They are definitely livable for a year, and some of the best times of your college life will take place within their walls. Although they are not terribly luxurious, they are actually pretty comfortable. When else in your life can you walk out of your room and find hundreds of people going through many of the exact same things you are?

Freshman Year in the Dorms

Although dorm life isn't the best, it is the best option for freshman. I lived in Walker Tower, which I highly suggest you choose as it is the cleanest and nicest of them all. For a freshman, living in the dorms puts you in the center of campus life. It helps you make new friends, get to know the campus, and helps you get to class more often when you only have to walk there. Cost wise, it is pretty average. It can be more expensive than most apartments, but cheaper than having to buy all your own food off campus. Having the meal plan helps freshmen a lot to not have to worry about where to find money for food. Not stressing about food will help you to focus more on class and getting through your freshman year.

Dorms Are for Freshmen

Typically, only freshmen live in the dorms. There is one floor designated in the towers for upperclassmen, but most live in Greek houses, or off campus houses and apartments. Dorms are small, but in a suite-style. You share a bathroom with your roommate, and two suitemates. Also, each floor in the towers has its own lounge with couches, a TV lounge, and study room, which is nice.

Good Enough

Dorms are small but livable. You'll get a classic dorm experience your freshman year, and almost everyone goes off campus or lives in Traditions after that.
