Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The definition of diversity varies from person to person. Some students at OU view diversity simply as students of different ethnic backgrounds, whereas others look at students’ economic backgrounds and where they grew up. So, depending on how you view diversity, you may or may not find OU’s campus to be diverse. OU’s campus is diverse only if you consider the fact that it is situated right in the middle of Oklahoma. The majority of OU students are white, and a large number of students come from middle- to upper-class families. Unfortunately, students do not tend to mingle outside of their race as much as students from other large, state schools. Therefore, students don’t get to experience different ways of life as much as they should. But while many ethnic groups seem to stick together, there certainly isn’t any tension between them.

Because students at OU come from all over the world, it is difficult to define the stereotypical OU student. Most OU students have no problem interacting with each other on a daily basis. So, while the minority population may not be as large as it could be, that does not deter students from interacting socially with one another. And with a student population representing over 100 different countries, there is always something, or someone, different from you that you can learn from.

Ethnic/Racial Diversity

The racial diversity is extremely vast and different. I hear about many students coming from different countries and states across the world, which I think is a great atmosphere at OU.

Asians Everywhere

It may have been because my Dorm was the centre for international students, but I couldn't get away from seeing someone from an Asian nation. And I know they weren't all from China, or Japan, there was a nice balance. There was also a few from Africa, but on a Global scale my collage is dominated by Asians and Whites. Most black students were from the state.

Student Survey Poll ResultsWhat's This?

How diverse is the student body in the following areas?

How diverse is your personal circle of friends in the following areas?

How accepting is the campus community as a whole toward someone who falls into the minority (ethnic, sexual, or religious)?

How would you best describe your personal political beliefs?

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

The gay population and its acceptance appears to be growing, but it is easy to find those coming from a conservative or religious upbringing who may not approve of alternative sexualities.

Economic Status

There is a large majority of white middle- to upper-class students. However, the University is expanding the number of scholarships it provides, which allows a more economically diverse student body to be represented on campus.

Most Common Religions

An overwhelming segment of the student body is Christian and takes part in religious organizations or worship services. This can be a great way to make friends if you fit into this category but might be a deterrent to fitting in socially for those who do not. Judaism and Islam are also present on campus with their respective student groups.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minority student organizations including clubs, fraternities, and sororities are active and include African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Latino groups.

Did You Know?

The OU Cousins program matches U.S. and international students to share informal and social experiences.

Students may volunteer to live on international floors with half of the residents from the United States and half from other countries.
