Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Half A$$: The mini-market adjacent to the dorms, actually named Half Acre.
  • The Huff: The main gym on campus.
  • Sooner: The school’s mascot. No one is really sure what it is, and if you know, you pretend not to.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • E.K. Gaylord owns more than the School of Journalism.
  • Football is the main religion.
  • Freshman move-in day is always the hottest and most humid day of the year.
  • Getting involved with campus activities does not mean that you have to go Greek, and it’s a great way to get to know more people.
  • Greek life and football are everything freshman year.
  • If your Student ID picture is horrible, and you absolutely feel you need it re-done, break it in half. Don’t lose it! Losing it costs $10 to replace, but breaking it costs nothing.
  • It’s not a bad thing to be undecided about a few things, such as your major—try taking a variety of classes to find out what suits you best.
  • Jobs on campus are an easy way to make money, and are generally not very demanding. A good time to study!
  • Many freshmen make friends at Camp Crimson in the summer, which gives them an advantage socially when classes start in August.
  • People born in Oklahoma have an inherited hate for anyone that goes to the University of Texas.
Tips to Succeed
  • Ask questions. Whether you’re asking the professor or other students, people are very friendly.
  • Choosing a major and sticking with it are key to graduating in four years.
  • Don’t drive to class.
  • Don't skip class. Many teachers include participation and attendance as part of your final grade.
  • Go to class. Sometimes that makes the difference when grades are borderline.
  • Joining an organization or club helps to make friends.
  • Read and keep your syllabi! Your professors put important information on them and assume that you have read them. They’ll hold you responsible for the information they hold.

Individuality

Our school makes a huge student body feel like a small family. I like that the school provides activities on the weekend so people have another option for fun that for drinking. My school is very greek but it is also a lot of fun and it is easy to find people who like the same things as me.

Research

My school offers students a wonderful opportunity to expand their college experience inside the class room and find research that complements the field they are studying. There is a huge research facility that the students can get familiar with and hopefully have a part in whenever they graduate. The students that graduate from here are given more priority in the research facilities so it makes it easier for new graduates to find work.

Real Life Experience

Through the school of social work I have been given the opportunity to get a real, hands on experience to complete my degree. I love putting all the knowledge I've learned in the classroom to work. I feel that I am actually helping others, not just recieving course credit. OU does an excellent job providing internship opportunities like mine to students for credit.

Facts

Traditions BOOMER! SOONER!: Whether it is in a bar or in a bank, if someone yells “Boomer,” everyone in the immediate vicinity yells back “Sooner.” This is not only the case on campus, but basically anywhere there are more than two OU fans. Oklahoma athletics boasts a tradition that few schools can rival. Over the years, the Sooners have captured 24 national championships, including eight in football, seven in wrestling, five in men’s gymnastics, two in baseball, one in men’s golf and one in softball. On game days, a sea of crimson rolls through OU’s home arenas, and all Sooner fans wear crimson and cream to show the rest of the country what Sooner pride is all about.
