Off-Campus Housing

Quick Stats

Undergrads Living Off Campus 71%

Best Time to Look for a Place

Many people who live in houses have leases that expire in May or early June, so then would be the best time to have a wide range of houses to choose from. Off-campus student living communities offer specials and deals throughout the year, which can lead to saving a substantial amount of money. It would be best to look around and keep an eye out for the best deal. Students should also keep in mind what is important to them when it comes to selecting an off-campus housing option--proximity to campus, pet policies, bathrooms. But there is no shortage of places to live in Norman, and one can find a house, apartment, or room at all times of the year.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus housing is almost easier to find and less stressful than moving into the dorms. There are so many options when looking for a place to live around campus. Obviously, off-campus housing isn’t as convenient as living on campus, but it is still a viable option, as the school provides shuttles to assist students with traveling back and forth to their apartments off campus. If you plan on living off campus, it is a good idea to start looking for housing early, unless you are just looking for a place to sleep at night. Finding a place for the following fall in the middle of spring semester almost guarantees that you will find a place that you will be satisfied with.

Many students will get together and rent a house or apartment within walking distance of their classes. A lot of students at OU have parents that are willing to buy them a cute house near campus, and then they rent it out to their friends afterward. Still, a lot of students choose apartment living because it is less permanent and more assistance is given. Some of the more common apartments for college students include Sterling and the Commons, and may I add that these are comprised of almost 90 percent college students. For those who opt not to have beer bongs and nightly parties at their pools in the summer, there are many options for the more mature, academically-conscious crowds as well.

Off-Campus Living

I haven't lived off campus yet, but from what I know and have heard, it is cheaper living off campus, especially if you have a roommate. Accomodations are nice, clean, and for the most part, convenient. The con is that you don't have as much security as you would living on campus.

The 3 Apartments Everyone Lives in.

There's Crimson Park, The Reserves, and The Commons. Those are the three big ones. They are constantly loud and crowded and, luckily, I've never lived there. There are nice apartments. Mine, at the Edge, is very nice; however, it's right next to the train tracks. If you're looking for something that is nice and cheap this is pretty much the only place. Everything else that is nice tends to be pricey. Or if it's cheap it's terrifying. Be careful where you look. Make sure you check reviews online or ask around the neighborhood. In fact, I would recommend renting a house with some friends above an apartment because it is much more available and affordable.

Pretty Cheap If You Know Where to Look

School sponsored facilities are expensive comparitively but there are many other options available. If you want to live with more people, you can cut the cost down to the lower 200s per month. However, many of the houses are old and seem ready to be condemned. If that is okay with you though, the places around campus seem pretty safe and are pretty convenient if you have a bike or are around the campus bus route.
