College Prowler Take
Students agree that safety on campus is not a huge issue. Although most college kids do have a feeling of invincibility anyway, the numbers actually back up the overall feeling of assurance. OU has the lowest crime rate out of all the Big 12 schools. While the most illegal action you’re going to find is a stolen bike or random wallet snatching, it is very unlikely to get attacked walking through campus at night. OU police are everywhere, and they let it be known that you are in fact “required” to pull over if being chased by a cop on their bicycle.
Don’t let the overwhelming presence of the OUPD fool you; with the prevalence of the blue phones and the continuous repetition of the phrase “stop crime before it starts,” one might think they are attending school somewhere where criminal activity is commonplace. Even though there are many features on campus that are in place to ensure the safety of all students, students still need to make intelligent decisions. It is not wise to travel anywhere alone late at night. However, if you do decide to take a stroll through campus at night, be sure not to wear anything that resembles a burnt orange shirt or jersey (a symbol of the hated rival Texas Longhorns) while doing so.

The campus is very safe. There is on-campus security everywhere, and there are always students around at all hours, so you are never isolated.

I think the security on campus is just fine. I would feel perfectly comfortable walking around at night by myself, but if it was after midnight, I’d have someone with me, but that is true for any and all locations. |

The campus is pretty safe. There are emergency boxes across campus, and a Safewalk service of men to walk people (mostly girls) across campus if they feel scared or if it’s late. I feel extremely safe on campus. |

Did You Know?
The OUPD has a Web site www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm where they debunk myths that many college students have about sobering up. Questions sent in by actual college students include, “They were serving spiked punch, but I couldn’t taste the alcohol—could I be drunk?”

Contributing Author Internship
College Prowler is actively seeking talented students to be "Contributing Authors," and assist with updating
the College Prowler guide to their school. This is a great opportunity for a student to gain internship experience, be a part of a nationally
recognized company, gain tremendous exposure, utilize new media techniques, and share advice with high school students about what life is
really like at your college. Read more about the internship.
