College Prowler Take
“Track Town, USA”; multiple Olympic trials at Hayward Field; men’s basketball in the Elite 8 . . . any of these factoids sound familiar? Varsity athletics are a big deal at the University of Oregon, which is home to some of the best teams and athletic facilities in the nation. Oregon is a fierce competitor in the Conference of Champions, the Pac-10, and all of Eugene gets behind the University in support of intercollegiate athletics. The popular football and men’s basketball events sell out student tickets within hours, though other sports only require a student ID for free admission. It never rains on Saturdays at Autzen Stadium, and fans would probably show up even if it did. Intramurals and club sports offer athletic alternatives to Division I competition. The UO’s intramurals are open to everyone on campus, and more organized club sports offer everything from a Judo group to a triathlon team. While you won’t feel pressured to be involved with sports at Oregon, many students do choose to join in some form; this makes it a great way to meet new people while keeping yourself in shape. If you’re interested in sporting events or think that weekends spent cheering on your favorite team are the way to go, you’ll feel right at home with UO’s athletic climate.
