Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Greek system at the University of Oregon has faced a lot of criticism in recent years. With all fraternities required to go dry and general recruitment struggling, Greeks aren’t what they used to be at UO. Students agree that if you’re a part of Greek life, it will be a big deal for you and probably grow to encompass most of your social atmosphere. Those who abstain from it, however, won’t be heavily affected. Rather than dominating campus social life, the Greeks offer a fun alternative to the bar scene. Most of the time, you’ll be able to get into frat parties without a problem, though many parties are now held off campus because of the alcohol restrictions.

The Greek system has definitely been struggling and seems more fitting for the underclassmen rather than older students. It’s not uncommon to hear of former Greeks who have dropped out of the system due to finding new friends, maturing out of it, or simply getting sick of sub-par living conditions. For those looking for it, however, the Greek system does offer a solid sense of community with a social atmosphere and allows you to bond and become great friends with people of all backgrounds.

There If You Want It.

Fraternity and Sorority Life is available if you want it. However, the information on this page is incorrect and outdated. There are 10 sororities and 15 fraternities and is growing all the time. Fraternity and Sorority Life is about 10% of the population but I think that percentage needs to be updated as well. If you know what fraternities and sororities are, you can find them or their members everywhere, but if you have no idea, you can pretty much not notice them. There is plenty to do if you choose to rush or not. There are parties whether or not you join. If you join, you can make it as much or as little of your life as you choose to. In addition, it is also easy to have friends outside of F&S Life if you want to. It can be balanced with club sports and other on campus activities as well. It does not have to take over your life if you don't want it to. It is a lot of fun though! Despite the rules, fraternities still have alcohol in their houses, and throw parties. Fraternities and sororities also have "live-outs" which are houses where their older members live but are not affiliated with the house... they are basically houses for parties to be held in. F&S Life does a lot for the on and off campus community and is a great way to get involved and meet people if you decide to rush. I highly recommend going through recruitment as a guy or girl. The processes are very different but rather than saying it just "isn't for everyone" I think that there are all sorts of people in every house and that whether you do or do not want to join, it is worth trying and experiencing because even if every aspect of it isn't for everyone, F&S Life as a whole, is.

The Greeks are really easy to get along with and talk to. My roommate is a sorority girl and I enjoy her friends when we see one another. It is not a big deal on this campus and everyone pretty much gets along.

It Seems to Be Growing Here at UO.

The Greek system went dry a while back but the their whole scene seems to be growing rapidly on campus. You see more and more of them. Their parties are great as well.
