College Prowler Take

The Greek system at the University of Oregon has faced a lot of criticism in recent years. With all fraternities required to go dry and general recruitment struggling, Greeks aren’t what they used to be at UO. Students agree that if you’re a part of Greek life, it will be a big deal for you and probably grow to encompass most of your social atmosphere. Those who abstain from it, however, won’t be heavily affected. Rather than dominating campus social life, the Greeks offer a fun alternative to the bar scene. Most of the time, you’ll be able to get into frat parties without a problem, though many parties are now held off campus because of the alcohol restrictions.

The Greek system has definitely been struggling and seems more fitting for the underclassmen rather than older students. It’s not uncommon to hear of former Greeks who have dropped out of the system due to finding new friends, maturing out of it, or simply getting sick of sub-par living conditions. For those looking for it, however, the Greek system does offer a solid sense of community with a social atmosphere and allows you to bond and become great friends with people of all backgrounds.

As a girl, you can get into any frat party you want; I’d say you’d be able to get free alcohol, but all the houses are dry. Anyway, I’m not into it and I still go out and have fun, but if you talk to people in the system they say there is no other way. You really kind of have to see it for yourself.

If you participate in it, you will definitely meet a lot of people and make good friends. I had a roommate who was a Kappa Delta; she says that it was one of her best decisions to go Greek. I’m not into the Greek life, but I have a lot of respect for the way they represent themselves. They definitely don’t fulfill the bad stereotypes.

Greek life is relatively small at the UO. It is very different from what one views as a stereotypical Greek community. Sorority women are not pressured to date Greek men—in fact, many don’t. Friendships with members from other chapters or those not affiliated with Greek life are encouraged. As a sorority member, I find that most of my best friends are not affiliated. However, the support system and unique bond among my sisters is something that nothing can replace. The Greek community does not dominate the social scene. The fraternities are no longer allowed to have any alcohol on their property. Thus, most parties have been moved to live-outs: non-Greeks living in large houses.

The UO is too liberal to let the Greeks dominate the scene. I mean, they are there, but no one pays much attention to them. They pretty much live in a bubble and do not socialize outside of their community.

A lot of my friends joined and dropped out within a year. It doesn’t dominate the social scene at all. All the frats are dry (no alcohol), and the sororities have been dry for even longer than the fraternities; they still have alcohol in their social events, but many are at off-campus locations, therefore not everyone can go. Fewer people join each year.

Did You Know?

All of Oregon’s Greek System was required to dry up in 2003. Officially, no alcohol is allowed at any fraternity or sorority meetings and parties, but drinking still occurs.
