Quick Stats

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Hippie Town USA - Eugene has become renowned over the years as a city that serves as home base for a large hippie population. Though this can be true—Eugene is a very diverse area—the legions of hippies you may be imagining are a bit of an exaggeration.
  • Mary Jane - Many that don’t attend the UO know it as a pot smoking school. This simply isn’t true. Yes, Eugene and the surrounding area are known for having a lot of marijuana; however, the culture is very open, and no one is forced or expected to participate. Most students at UO make the wise choice to avoid marijuana, and this is perfectly acceptable.
  • Nike - Yes, Nike was founded in Eugene, Oregon. Former legendary head track coach Bill Bowerman and Nike CEO Phil Knight were co-founders of the company, which has become the largest sports marketer in the world.
  • Rain, Rain, Rain - Any rumors you may have heard about huge amounts of rain in Oregon are probably true. It rains nearly nine months out of the year sometimes, which can make it seem gloomy. At the same time, however, this is why this state is so beautiful and green.
  • School Spirit - The school spirit at the UO has to be higher than any other school in the area. Almost everyone in Eugene owns some type of sports memorabilia, and everyone is supportive of the school in general. Eugene is very much a college town, and the whole community backs the University and its students with great support.

We Are Pretty Normal

Besides the ongoing construction that has been happening since I have been a student here, this school is pretty normal. The athletics and tailgating can be a lot of fun, and during the spring the carnivals in the middle of campus is amazing. Its a really fun and easy way to meet new people. It can be hard to meet new people outside of the joining an organization (other than during the first week or two of fall and the last few weeks of spring) because, everybody is busy trying to stay out the rain. But there are great opportunities everywhere you just have to look for them.

Facts

Traditions
  • Autzen: “It never rains at Autzen stadium.” It’s a tradition for the announcer to call this out sometime during each football game, and students expect it. Despite the fact that Eugene is renowned for its rain, it’s a true fact that it never rains at Autzen stadium.
  • Pit Crew: The UO Pit Crew has tradition written all over it. This is a group of students that wear yellow shirts and vie for a spot in the Pit Crew at the beginning of every season. These are sports-crazy students that attend every basketball game to agitate the opposing team while making more noise that the takeoff of a 747. The “Pit Crew” is an essential part of one of the oldest and most feared basketball stadiums in the country.
  • Street Fair: Usually twice a year, once in fall term and once in spring, the street fair lines the entire stretch of campus on 13th Street. From exceptional Thai food and other dining adventures to plenty of arts and crafts, the street fair is something all students look forward to.
