College Prowler Take
The University of Oregon works to provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere for its students at all times. Safety officers patrol the dormitories and campus day and night. The UO takes many precautions when it comes to its students’ safety—the Assault Prevention Shuttle (APS) service, for example, helps to alleviate fear of walking alone at night. Other programs like the Designated Driver Service (DDS) make students feel secure in knowing they have a ride home anywhere in town, without having to drink and drive. Overall, students say that the UO campus is a safe place to be if you’re smart. It’s important not to walk alone at night, and a little bit of common sense can go a long way in terms of keeping you safe. While the UO has had difficulties in the past with crime, most students agree that campus is still a safe place to be. The University has had a few riots in the past, but fortunately no one was seriously injured. Due to increased violence by students and members of the community, however, there has been a need to increase safety and security. The University makes a good effort to provide the safest possible atmosphere on campus and prevent any further problems.

I have never felt on unsafe, although make sure to avoid the cemetery at night---there have been some assaults there. They also have panic boxes, which are denoted with blue lights. You hit them if you are in distress, and campus security (DPS) will quickly respond. Finally, do not drink obscene amounts in the dorm. It is stupid, and the RAs may write you up.

Security and safety on campus are good. I have never felt unsafe or scared even to walk to another hall or the library even late at night. An incident or two have occurred this year, but it has all been just outside of campus. The school provides shuttles that will pick you up for free and take you to where you want to go if you don't want to walk.

I think it is pretty safe. There is the security place right on campus, and there are call boxes to hit if you ever feel unsafe. There is also an assault prevention shuttle that students can call to pick them up.

As far as living on campus, I lived in the dorms my freshman year, and I genuinely felt safe there. I always feel safe walking around campus during the day and evening hours. At night, it is a good idea to be with a friend. This year, as well as last, there have been some attempted rapes on and around campus. We do have Public Safety on the grounds, and lighted boxes. All in all, the campus and Eugene is safe. Like any area, it’s just about being smart. |

Some attacks on women, and a few isolated incidents . . . what I can say is that the University is placing a lot of emphasis on safety and is constantly trying to make changes for the safety of the students. |

Did You Know? The Department of Public Safety recently organized a Public Safety Advisory Group to serve as an active liaison between members of the community and DPS while keeping communication lines open. In September 2002, nearly 1,000 students rioted in the West University area after drunken partygoers piled up mattresses and other furniture on a traffic circle and set it ablaze. By the end of the evening, 35 students were arrested and nearly $20,000 worth of damage had accumulated. The administration has since cracked down, enforcing a no-drinking policy for campus residents. Guards are now trained to watch out for students who are staggering and/or have possession of alcohol.
