College Prowler Take
One student surveyed for this book stated that “the intellects of the world are typically not the same as the beauties,” but at Penn, people certainly make the best of what they were born with. In addition to the fact that people make an effort to enhance their appearance, the personality beneath the designer jeans and styled hair is often quite attractive, as well. Girls tend to like the selection of guys better than the other way around. This may be due to the fact that Penn is chock-full of clean-cut, intelligent, and wealthy men. The guys may complain that the girls’ looks aren’t quite up to par with what they imagine they would be at a West Coast or Southern school, but the complaints usually end the moment they find “their type,” which occurs almost without exception. Even if you had trouble finding someone of the opposite (or same) sex who appealed to you in high school, the increased number of people itself will increase your chances of finding the right person, or in most cases, people, for you. As picky as you may be about who you choose to “spend time with,” at Penn, you pretty much automatically know the person hitting on you at that party is intelligent and has some good qualities, otherwise he would not be here. As far as promiscuity, people are definitely not prude, but if you come to school a virgin, you will not be alone.

Competition for guys at Penn is fairly stiff. There are lots of good-looking guys and an excess of busted girls. To make matters worse, the girls tend to be super stuck-up. Also, for some strange reason, Penn kids tend to have big coolness inferiority complexes that stem from high school. As a result, people can be really unfriendly in social situations for no good reason. However, if you’re formally introduced, say through a friend, they tend to open up and are usually friendlier. |

It’s a big school, and you have a pretty good chance that you’re going to meet ‘your type.’ Just like high school, you’ll meet your share of jerks, but there are also nice guys—they’ve had a few more years to grow up, so it’s not as bad. The same thing goes for girls. It’s a mix. You meet stuck-up girls, and you meet really sweet girls. |

It just seems like East Coast girls don’t care as much as West Coast girls when it comes to appearance. But in an attempt to be fair, the girls at Penn are a pretty good lot. |

Guys are . . . not all that bad. Girls are . . . not bad either. Although, lots of guys think the girls are ugly and vice versa. I wouldn’t call either necessarily ‘hot.’ The most attractive ones are usually in fraternities and sororities. |

The people at Penn are pretty good looking. Everyone here seems to be pretty trendy—people seem to dress up in the Banana Republic style a lot. Very sleek. |
FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - Women with a prescription can receive refills for birth control medication at Student Health services. Condoms are also available for sale from Women's Health. They're also available free-of-charge at the Office of Health education and in many dorms from the RAs.
Social Scene
Penn has been called the "social Ivy," and this designation might very well be accurate. People tend to be extroverted and love to have fun. Freshmen orientation is probably social interaction at it's most extreme. New freshmen and upperclassmen returning early from summer vacation go out practically every night before classes start and feel free to introduce themselves to random people outside on the street. However, this does not at all mean that you must find your life-long buddies in the first week of school. Normally, it will take longer to find people you really connect with, but in the meanwhile, if you are friendly, you will have no trouble finding people to hang out with.
Hookups or Relationships?
Both random hook-ups and committed relationships occur. However, it seems that the most common occurrence is what some of us like to call "the College Relationship." The College Relationship is the hook up that turns into "a person to hang out with," more or less, a friend with benefits. This is a person whose company you sincerely enjoy, and you choose to spend extra time both hanging out and hooking up with, but there is no spoken commitment involved.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
While students at Penn tend to have active weekend social lives, they are also very serious about their school work during the week. As a result of this, it is not uncommon to meet people in recitation or study groups. As a freshman with a meal plan, lunch and dinner at the dining halls is also an easy way to meet people. I'll help you out: Step 1. Swipe your Penn card for entrance into the dining hall. Step 2. Spot a table with one or two people you recognize. Step 3. If there's room at the table, ask politely if you can join them (don't worry, they will say yes). Step 4. Meet everyone at the table. It's simple! Like at most schools, it is also easy to meet people at the many fraternity and sorority events on and off-campus, most of which are open to those not involved in the Greek scene. For those that are involved, fraternities and sororities often mix with one another, which is a great way to make new acquaintances. It is also relatively easy to meet people in your dorm, since everyone tends to become friendly with the people in their hall by the first month or so, which leads to many other opportunities. Clubs and going to the gym are also a great way of getting to know people.
Dress Code
It is hard to characterize the way Penn students dress. Some take a very casual approach, wearing sweatpants by day and jeans and a T-shirt by night. Others are much more conscious of their personal appearance. These people tend to dress very stylish or preppy. Given the large amount of well-off students at Penn, you may seem more people donning expensive clothing than you would expect from other schools. That being said, although certain social groups or stereotypes may dress a certain way, there is no set dress code at Penn.
