Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In a large city like Philadelphia, life would be terribly complicated without public transportation. As mentioned earlier in this book, parking in the city is a nightmare, and the convenience of cabs, regional rail, subways, buses, and trolleys is one greatly appreciated by students. Some complain about the logic and price of the subway and trolley routes, but if you’re not from a haven of public transportation like New York, you will probably think it is great.

One great thing about Penn’s location is that Center City and South Street, two great places to venture out to, are in easy walking distance. If it’s late, or you are going to somewhere further like Old City, splitting a cab with a couple friends makes the ride affordable and easy. The school is also within close proximity to a greyhound bus station, and some more pocket-weary students take advantage of the Chinatown bus which travels to other big cities on the east coast often for incredibly cheap fares. The 30th Street Station, from which Amtrak and Septa trains depart, is within blocks of campus. It provides an easy way to get home for students from the northeastern states, and it makes a weekend getaway to Washington D.C., New York, or Baltimore just a few easy hours away.

Everything Is in Walking Distance

You can walk anywhere you need to go on campus and if you decide that walking isn't fast enough, get a subscription to Penn's rent a cycle program or just bring you're on bus. Other than that you can septa, zipcar, train, fly or taxi wherever you need to go.

Buses Are a Upenn Girl's Best Friend

Public transportation is great in the city of Philadelphia. The city has buses that run at all hours of the day, and access to schedules and routes are available at all stations as well as via the web. There are also university shuttle buses that you can catch on campus that travel on and around campus.
