Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics at Pitt are impressive and exciting. Pitt's football team is often ranked in the top 25 in the nation and goes to a bowl game virtually every year. The program is expected to go nowhere but up at this point. With positive seasons last few years, the recruiting possibilities are promising. The men's basketball team has been nationally ranked over the past few seasons, reaching a school high of number one, and they look to have a bright future ahead of them. Other varsity sports don't have the same draw as these two teams, but Pitt athletics holds its own in nearly every area. The swimming and diving teams always do well but are largely overlooked. And the volleyball team has had great seasons, too.

For those who don't want to play on varsity teams, there are numerous IM and club sports at Pitt. Soccer, football, basketball, and volleyball are most popular among students. All of these are coed and run each semester with a final playoff session at the end of the season. Although there are a lot of IM sports, many students really aren't aware of them. In fact, compared to the number of students that attend the University, participation in IMs is remarkably low. If you're looking for something even less formal, there are often pick-up games of Frisbee or soccer on the Cathedral lawn, and it's never hard to find friends in the dorms looking to toss around a football or shoot some hoops.

The Oakland Zoo

Going to games is a big deal on campus. Most students get season tickets for football. Its great to get there early to score front row seats. It can get pretty heated, but its a lot of fun. The actual cheering is its own event!

Hail to Pitt!

Everyone at Pitt seems to be pretty supportive of our major teams. Even if the football team is losing, a ton of students go to the games and dress up in Pitt gear, some in awesome, completely over-the-top outfits. There are various cheers and such, the favorite being Sweet Caroline at the end of the third quarter. The basketball games are awesome! Pitt is known for the "Oakland Zoo" - one of the noisiest student sections in the country. Basically, there is a ton of school spirit, and any game is fun to go to and cheer on your team with all your fellow Panthers.

Most Overlooked Teams

Baseball, softball, volleyball, swimming, lacrosse, and rugby are all teams that don’t get very much campus attention.

School Spirit

Pitt students are known for having lots of school spirit. Faces are painted blue and gold, cheers are shouted at major sporting events, and many games sell out. Pitt gear is abundant around campus, and you’ll even spot students or alumni across the country because of clothing, bumper stickers, or other slogans. The Oakland Zoo follows the Pitt basketball team with more passion than an over-acted soap opera. School pride isn’t a requirement for coming to Pitt, but it doesn’t need to be—students develop it well enough on their own.

Getting Tickets

Football tickets are easy to come by, and they are cheap for students. At $25 a set, season tickets give students seating at every home game. Make sure to get to Heinz Field early because once the lower student section fills up, you have to head up to the nosebleed section. Basketball tickets are also cheap–$5 for a game ticket. However, the tickets are given out by both a lottery and point accumulation system. This has been a source of complaint by students for the last few years, but compared to a number of other large basketball schools the system is relatively easy and fair. All other sporting events are free.
