College Prowler Take
Athletics at Pitt are impressive and exciting. Pitt's football team is often ranked in the top 25 in the nation and goes to a bowl game virtually every year. The program is expected to go nowhere but up at this point. With positive seasons last few years, the recruiting possibilities are promising. The men's basketball team has been nationally ranked over the past number of season, reaching a school high of number one, and they look to have a bright future ahead of them. Other varsity sports don't have the same draw as these two teams, but Pitt athletics holds its own in nearly every area. The swimming and diving teams always do well but are largely overlooked. And the volleyball team has had great seasons, too. For those who don't want to play on varsity teams, there are numerous IM and club sports at Pitt. Soccer, football, basketball, and volleyball are most popular among students. All of these are coed and run each semester with a final playoff session at the end of the season. Although there are a lot of IM sports, many students really aren't aware of them. In fact, compared to the number of students that attend the University, participation in IMs is remarkably low. If you're looking for something even less formal, there are often pick-up games of Frisbee or soccer on the Cathedral lawn, and it's never hard to find friends in the dorms looking to toss around a football or shoot some hoops.

Pitt is definitely a football and basketball school, for sure. It’s easy to get season tickets for football, but for basketball, good luck. IM football, rugby, and other sports are starting to attract a sizable following as well. |

If varsity sports aren’t your thing, all you have to do is walk by the Cathedral anytime from late August into mid-November and you’ll find 30–40 guys and girls playing rugby or ultimate Frisbee. There’s something for everyone. |

Pitt does not tend to be quite as sports-oriented as many other large state schools. Over the past couple of seasons, however, more attention has been drawn to sports, particularly the football and basketball programs. With some really great players, these two sports have been getting a lot of attention recently. |

Football and men’s basketball continue to be entertaining events. It’s really great going to a Division I school because it acts as a cohesive for the student body. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Fitzgerald Field House - The Field House serves as the home for a few of Pitt’s sports programs, notably volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling, and indoor track and field. The Panthers have access to nearly 8,600 pounds of free weights at this facility, as well as great locker rooms and other amenities for athletes.
- Gymnastics Training Center - The Gymnastics Training Center is one of the largest training facilities in the Northeast Region. It houses two vaulting set-ups, three sets of uneven bars, five balance beams, and a full floor exercise area.
- Petersen Events Center - Built as the new home of Panther basketball, the Pete was completed in the spring of 2002. In addition to the basketball team, this arena is used for campus ceremonies, graduation, concerts, and other events. The concourse features several eateries that are open to students during the daytime and a large recreation area (free weights, exercise machines, aerobic equipment, and racquetball courts) that is available for students.
- The Charles L. Cost Center - One of the newest athletic facilities, the Cost Center is big enough inside to house a regulation football field, or nine tennis courts. It functions as an indoor facility for football, baseball, and softball teams.
- Trees Hall - Trees is the home of the Panther swimming and diving team, and it houses the main pools used at the University. There are two main gyms and two swimming pools, as well as great diving areas.

Getting Tickets
Football tickets are easy to come by, and they are cheap for students. At $25 a set, season tickets give students seating at every home game. Make sure to get to Heinz Field early because once the lower student section fills up, you have to head up to the nosebleed section. Basketball tickets are also cheap–$5 for a game ticket. However, the tickets are given out by both a lottery and point accumulation system. This has been a source of complaint by students for the last few years, but compared to a number of other large basketball schools the system is relatively easy and fair. All other sporting events are free.

Most Overlooked Teams
Baseball, softball, volleyball, swimming, lacrosse, and rugby are all teams that don’t get very much campus attention.
