Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity is a very subjective area for Pitt students, and what you hear really depends on who you talk to. Numbers speak for themselves—there is a large white majority at the University, and many people are from Pennsylvania or the surrounding areas. If you’re coming to Pittsburgh from one of its many suburbs, you’ll probably be impressed with the number of different people you can find. The same is true of the Oakland area, which is home to a lot of schools that are even more diverse than Pitt. For those from other cities or very diverse areas, however, the University itself may seem depressingly homogenous.

While diversity isn’t a major issue around campus, there are many student groups available for minorities to gather and hold activities, promote causes, and socialize. In addition to groups based strictly on ethnicity, there is also a wide range of interests covered by these clubs. Religion, politics, athletics, music, and hobbies are all very diverse areas around Pitt, and these can sometimes be the best way to make new friends. You’ll find that students have a huge range of backgrounds and beliefs, and there really are many niches to fall into. If you want to have a diverse social circle, it’s entirely possible at Pitt; you may just have to look a little harder than the people you first run into on move-in day.

They are working hard to make campus diverse

When I first read reviews about Pitt's diversity, I wasn't too impressed. However, during the application process they really reached out to minority applicants and gave them lots of opportunities to make them welcome to the University. I not only received a full ride scholarship for minority students, but they funded a FREE trip for me to visit campus, including a one night hotel room at the Hilton! PITT is now improving its diversity by adding many culturally-oriented academic communities and MANY OCC clubs too for anyone!

Lots of Diversity

Pitt is huge on diversity. I have met people from all over the world, of all religions, of all the possible sexual orientations. The best thing is that generally everyone is acceptance. What's better is that if someone doesn't like you, they tend to ignore you, rather than bully or annoy you.

Facts

Gay Pride

Pitt students are generally accepting of people with any lifestyle. There are a number of homosexual student groups through campus acting to raise awareness and foster a better environment for the gay and lesbian community. A few gay bars also exist in the area.

Political Activity

Political activity is abundant around campus. However, only a small portion of students actually involve themselves in it. There are many different clubs and organizations for political causes that students can become involved with and join, such as the Student Government Board (SGB), Pitt's student council.

Economic Status

There are students from every possible economic background you could imagine. Money is not something openly discussed between students, and it is not really an issue across the campus.

Most Common Religions

There are a few religious organizations throughout the campus. Although much of the campus considers itself Christian or Catholic, the most predominant religious organization on campus is the Jewish organization, Hillel. There are also a number of people who do not consider themselves to be religious or practice a variety of other religions.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are plenty of minority clubs on campus, including the Asian Student Association, the Black Action Society, and the Rainbow Alliance, to name a few. Minority clubs hold a strong presence on campus and are becoming more and more well known and diverse as the years go by.
