College Prowler Take
Greek life is definitely visible on campus, and students are aware of its presence. It does not, however, dominate the social scene in any way. Many students who choose to go Greek do so under little or no pressure. There are plenty of Greek organizations to join on campus, and each is different and unique in its own way—there’s a lot of time to get to know them before deciding to pledge. Overall, the Greek community accounts for a very small percentage of students. Joining will obviously earn you some new friends and resources for entertainment and leadership; choosing not to join, though, shouldn’t have any effect on you at all. Many who are involved in the fraternities and sororities feel that Greek life is a rewarding opportunity, and have no regrets. For those who don’t go Greek, many find they can still hang out with Greek friends, or attend functions and parties. It will be a little more difficult to get into parties if you’re a guy, but with all the house parties in the area, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. In everyday life, the Greek system is seen as just another part of campus, and there’s little to no tension between Greeks and non-Greeks.

The Greek life at Pitt is good...
The Greek life at Pitt is good because if you want to be Greek, you have ample opportunity, and the Greeks do a lot of good things on campus. However, if that isn’t your cup of tea, you can remain active on campus through the other 300 organizations. |

On such a large, diverse campus, Greek life is regarded as more of yet another student option, rather than a popularity or recreation must. |

Greek life is not big at Pitt at...
Greek life is not big at Pitt at all. There’s so much other stuff to do off campus, from partying to clubbing and bar hopping. If you are really into the whole frat thing, then it’s a great experience. You will probably develop long-lasting friendships and a sense of family on campus. But you do not need a frat or sorority to feel at home on campus. |

Going Greek has been great for me....
Going Greek has been great for me. One of the most important things about it is that you are having all this fun, but you also help out the community. A lot of the Greek events are fundraisers to benefit a different non-profit each year, and it’s also a good way to become a leader on campus. Greek life doesn’t consume Pitt’s campus, but it’s big enough to be worth it if that’s what you’re interested in. |
