College Prowler Take
Pittsburgh has a typical, Northeastern conglomeration of weather—plenty of sunshine, snow, rain, and clouds. Typical summers range from warm to sweltering, depending on whether you’re fortunate enough to have air conditioning. There’s always a lot of sun keeping the city warm and bright, and often, humidity runs high. This type of weather usually runs from mid-May until early September, after which it tapers off into winter. During the school year, temperatures often hover around freezing, and effectively keep students from leaving their apartments or dorms, even to go to class. The wind is one of the worst features about Pittsburgh winter. Even when it seems like the buildings should act as a windbreak, there are often frigid gusts to deal with when you’re out walking. Students who are not used to this type of weather can have a hard time adjusting to the consecutive dreary days. But if you like changing seasons, then you should get along fine in Pittsburgh. Be sure to bring rain gear and wear clothes that can be layered. And remember, there can be a 30 degree difference between any two days, so it's a good idea to have a wide range of clothing with you when you leave for school.

Summers are pretty nice; winters are cold, and it snows most days. It's a lot colder and a lot snowier than the East Coast.

There are four full seasons in Pittsburgh. Snow falls in winter, and it gets into the upper 80s in the beginning of fall and the end of spring. Don’t forget an umbrella. |

Pittsburgh is hot and humid in the summer, and cold and bitter in the winter. Plan accordingly. For me, that means shorts and T-shirts for the fall, and sweaters, jeans, warm shoes, and a heavy winter coat for the winter. |

Your best bet is to bring some of everything, dress in layers, and bring a sturdy umbrella because you never know what you’re going to get when you come—each year it seems to be totally different. |

It’s kind of crappy in the winter. It’s usually overcast and windy. We haven’t gotten that much snow in the three years I’ve been here. It rains a lot, but the summer is absolutely gorgeous. |
