Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In terms of academics, you will be running with a very fast pack at UPS. The workload tends to be reading heavy, but if you do it and actually attend class, you can get a lot out of a UPS education. The professors hold their students to high expectations. UPS provides plenty of opportunities to do that through an array of interesting and engaging classes and independent research. Writing is stressed across all disciplines at UPS, and students can expect to do a lot of it. If you are stumped with a paper topic, have questions about course material, or simply want to continue the academic discussion, professors are more than willing to meet with you during office hours or for coffee.

The quality of education is very high here. All classes, including labs, are taught by professors, and professors grade all papers and tests. Many of the professors are in the top of their fields, and some have even authored the text used in their courses. Freshman students are assigned a professor from one of their potential major classes to serve as an adviser for their first year. Students can then choose to switch to an adviser in their field to pursue their academic interests and thesis. Students can ensure a sound education by actively creating personal bonds and relationships with professors—not always possible at larger institutions. Teaching assistants (TAs), also very talented, aid profs when needed and provide peer reviews of student work, but the teaching is never left to them.

Difficult classes and a variety of courses to choose from. Facilities and labs are exceptional, with the opportunity to do your own research.

Good

Very good academics, small class sizes and professor availability. The registration process is horrible though. As a junior I would hope to be able to get into some of my first choice classes but I never do. I have heard seniors complain of the same thing. It just doesn't seem fair. Also I had a horrible experience with my schedule this year where the registrar made a mistake and let me sign up for a freshman seminar that wasn't labeled as a seminar. They then emailed me telling it was, and so I had to change my entire schedule around again.

Professors Are Involved and Encouraging

I'm planning on majoring in English with a concentration in Creative Writing, and so far my English professors have been more involved and active in my academics than any other professors. They are very passionate and knowledgeable about their subjects.
