Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Puget Sound encourages participation in athletics as a means of achieving a more well-rounded education and balanced lifestyle. Even the most talented, dedicated athletes at UPS—of which there are many—place their work in the classroom over their work on the field. But these athletes play as hard as they work; UPS boasts one of the best collegiate crew teams in the nation. The women’s basketball team made it to the Elite Eight of the Division III National Tournament. A number of school policies reinforce the value of academics—the school offers no athletic scholarships. But Puget Sound is proud of its accomplished athletes, and many of their award-winning sportsmen and women are honored with a spot in the University of Puget Sound Athletic Hall of Fame.

Many students participate in intramural sports. There are IM sports such as flag football, court volleyball, and racquetball, which are offered each year during four separate seasons (two per semester). The IM teams are formed to represent dorms, classes, majors, or just a group of friends who want to release some tension in the afternoon. Everyone at Puget Sound, including faculty and staff, is able to form an IM team, adding another level of fun to the games. Like the other athletes at UPS, IM athletes do not go without recognition; the University honors all teams who have won championship titles with the much-heralded Intramural Championship Awards.

Not the Best, but Some Opportunity.

Well, if our football team would win once in a while... but no, not a single win. The other sports are competitive, and fun to watch. There aren't as many people watching as there should be, but there's too many watching at the football games. The intramural and club sports are a lot of fun too.

Fairly Average Quality, Strong Community

Overall, Puget Sound's athletics are decent when it comes to competition, but excellent in terms of the community it offers. It's a welcoming community that works very hard and pushes students' limits, but it's not like we're dominating every regional championship possible. Of note is the Men and Womens Crew teams -varsity and novice are stellar competitors and wonderful people.

School Spirit

While students here may not be bustling with school spirit in the form of athletic cheers and clothing, people are very proud of UPS. Almost everybody has a high degree of respect for the institution overall, but real appreciation and loyalty is seen within departments, teams, and other clubs or social groups.

Getting Tickets
