College Prowler Take

The overiding sentiment about the food options at UPS is quality, not diversity, but this is not to say that students are stuck eating the same foods everyday. There are Mexican, vegetarian and vegan, Italian, Asian, and American foods available in the numerous campus eateries, so any specific taste or craving has a pretty good chance of being satisfied. In spite of the variety, the choices that each of the venues offer can get old to campus veterans, leaving some of the older students frustrated. To thwart this, Dining Services makes an effort to provide seasonal changes such as different fruits and holiday-themed dinners and desserts in December and other months.

The meal plan at UPS consists of a “point” system where each student’s ID card works like a debit card. People typically put points (money) on their card at the beginning of the semester, but more can be added at any time. Every food item is assigned a price in points, and points are deducted for whatever you choose to get. This allows students to eat whenever they want without the constraints of a lunch or dinner hour in a meals-per-week system. Visitors and students without a meal plan can purchase food with cash, but it is cheaper to buy food with points. The meal plan points work at all of the campus dining venues. Most students are pleased with the meal plan and say that compared to other schools, the cheap food prices are great and help students get the most out of their meals.

The four places to get food on campus are The SUB (Student Union Building), Diversions Café, the Oppenheimer Café, and the Cellar. The SUB has above-average college food. The sandwiches are good, and there are a lot of options: Italian, Asain, Mexican, Vegeterian, Grill, FullFare, Sandwich Station, and fully organic salad bar. Diversions Café is a joke---it takes forever to get a coffee. Oppenheimer has really friendly staff and fast service. Get coffee, cookies, wraps, and other snacks here. The Cellar is amazing; great pizza and junk food.

History

The food served on campus is...

The food served on campus is generally very good. During my freshman year, I was surprised at how good it really was. After freshman year, it can get old to keep eating the same types of meals over and over, but they try to offer as much variety as possible. The dining hall is also open until 10 p.m., so you can get food almost any time. The Cellar (a downstairs store that offers candy, drinks, and snack food, and also serves pizzas) is a great place to go when you can't find anything appetizing upstairs in the regular dining hall. They can make you a pizza of your choosing, and they are open until midnight every night.

Food is pretty good here for what they have to work with, especially the vegetarian stuff, but watch out for the meat. Usually I would take the vegetarian food over the meat.

Food on campus is better than...

Food on campus is better than average; however, after eating it everyday, you will get tired of it. For those people who are vegetarians (like me), there is a station devoted to vegetarian and vegan food, and it is tasty. There is only one main dining area because the campus is so small. Below the main dining hall, there is a pizza/snack hang-out called "The Cellar." They make extremely tasty pizza, which you can charge to your student card. There are also two coffee shops on campus.

I really like the ladies who work at the SUB. They are so friendly and really brighten my day by greeting me by name and asking me how school is going. It’s like having a substitute parent there, and it’s funny to think that they mother all the students the same way.
