Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Rules at UPS are primarily peer-enforced. Resident assistants (RAs) are responsible for their residence halls and have a fairly high level of autonomy when enforcing rules. Many RAs will deal with a situation by finding a solution without any outside involvement. Students also work out issues among themselves, as long as their actions do not affect the general community. When an RA has to write up a student, the students goes before the Honor Court, the judicial branch of the Associated Students of the University of Puget Sound. The Honor Court is a rotating panel of students and faculty members who help find restitution to a given situation. They are the final authority on all matters that appear before them, so whatever they say goes.

The same policy applies to academic enforcement. The school takes an aggressive stance on plagiarism. Students here are honest, and the vast majority would not think of stealing intellectual property. When someone does, however, they are punished to the fullest extent possible, often resulting in expulsion. Students seem to take this academic policy very seriously, more so than University policies concerning drugs and alcohol. All of the school policies are contained in a book called The Logger, which is distributed to students every year. The University has an extensive Integrity Code outlining all of its expectations of students and describes sanctions like probation, eviction, and expulsion for code violations.

Drinking.

The school advertises its ability to be very open about drinking but will gladly give you a "write up" for even witnessing someone be in the possession of alcohol and not calling security. This has dramatically affected my social life. They are out to catch kids partaking in these actions and have very strict policies which they stand by. If you like to drink and like to get drunk do not go here, your college experience will be different then what you may expect. I would advise very light party-people to go here or if you are looking for a low-key party scene this is the place. I was expecting a different experience then what was advertised by the school.

Security Is Decent

Security is decent at finding people who break the rules, but there isn't a whole lot of actual punishment going on. Nobody has been expelled for drinking or smoking, only written up.

It's a Good Policy

Campus Security does a very good job at Puget Sound. Don't get me wrong, I am not biased, I am a college student who participates in partying and such but in general the school has a pretty good policy when it comes to alcohol: drink responsibly. And there is no pressure to drink or party either. Simply put security is there to keep students safe and they do it well.
